Wierd thing when starting my motor..
#1
When the car is cold started, like in the morning, it fires off right away but right after the initial start the RPM's fall off to about 500 for a second then jump right back to around 1100 to 1200 and then everything stays normal.
I recently re-oiled my filter and thought I might have over saturated it so I re-cleaned it and re-oiled it again making sure not to overdo it. Put it back on and still have the same problem. Any idea's?

no noises
just sounds like its slowing down. No other lights or nothing. I'll check for filter oil in the throttle body tonight. Other than this the car runs great. Still as strong as before in all other aspects.

I keep telling you people. Alternator. Seems to be a problem on the 97s. Check it. Mine did the same thing, then caught fire. Had it replaced at the dealer and I have no such problems anymore. My car is parked outside in 20 degree weather and the car roars to a start now and stays above 1000rpm during warm up. No dips. Do you have a funny whine too? Listen to another maxima. Maybe a 95 or something. And see if your engine sound different. Mine had a supercharger type whine when things started going south.

cleaned the throttle body
got home tonight and opened the hood to check things out. I moved the throttle valve by hand and noticed it was sticking when going from closed to barely open. Took everything off up to the TB and sure enough, it was gunked up. Cleaned it real good. Seemed like carbon and some of the K&N oil. It didn't coat everything but was right around the edge of the butterfly plate. Put it back together and it fired right up and held at a steady rpm. Thanks for the input guys.

Re: Alternator
Well, the alernator is spun by the engine.. If there is something wrong with the alernator.. Like maybe it doesn't want to spin.. It will bog the engine.

As a mechanic I cannot understand how an Alternator would affect rpm,s in any way. Of course I,m always learning something new everyday and maybe you or somebody else can explain how an alternator would do this.
