I was trying to buy an Xterra yesterday and a salesman saw me pull up in my max...

anyway, after we talked about the xterra and how that the one i want isn't anywhere near texas, i'd have a tough time finding one...discussed ordering one etc...

anyway, then he says something like: yeah i had a guy who wanted a 97 maxima (yours is a 97 right?) in a 5 speed, which is pretty hard to find, but he wanted the traction control

--> at this point alarm sirens are ringing in my head...traction control in a U.S. 97?? not new, not for a million bucks

then he goes on to say: but i told him w/ abs and 5-speed you wouldn't need traction control, now if he got an auto, yes, but w/ the 5-speed no...

--> WTF??? is this guy high or what??

anyway, needless to say, I didn't order from that dealer.

just thought you guys w/ 97-99's should know that we should have gotten traction control...apparently it was available!!!

LMAO

Wow a stupid salesperson ... Ive never seen that before <LOL>. Actually it was funny I was bringing in my '98 for the scheduled checkup earlier this year and I figure I'd take a look at the 2k to kill my wait time. This 18 yo kid took me for a test drive telling me all about the extra power etc. So when I got back to his desk I asked him to draw me up some #s for a lease and he did not even know HOW to compute the lease or the vehicle MSRP (and obviously not the true dealer cost). Can we say DUH! Selling something and not even knowing how much it goes for ... I felt bad for him he was so freaking inept twas like a lamb to slaughter. It must have been his 1st day on his 1st job. Not a good first job better to leave it to the professional sharks.

I seem to remember traction control as an option on automatic 4th gens from 98-99 (or maybe just 99). It was called TRAC or something like that.

Check out this Edmunds link. It mentions it.

he was talking about a MANUAL...said the guy was ordering a MANUAL w/ trac control...he kept saying the guy didn't need it b/c he had a 5-speed etc....

and he kept emphasizing it was a 97!!!! supposedly they guy changed his mind and got an auto (w/ traction control supposedly? in 97?)

Yep, car salesmen have a way of pulling inflated numbers out of their @$$es to impress the customer. A few years back before I bought the Maxima, I was testdriving a 96 Camry LE 4-cyl. It had 125hp. I mentioned to the salesman that it felt pretty good despite the 4-banger, and he said of course, it has 150 HORSEPOWER! Playing along with his game, I decided to mess with his head. I asked how much hp the V6 had, and he said OVER 200! Then he said the Camry is SPORTIER than Maxima. Toyota salesmen are the worst.

Ha!
