Just ordered my tranny!
I am doing a 5spd conversion this wednesday and I originally had ordered an VLSD from a junkyard(no names given here) and it turns out it wasnt an VLSD. I got a HUGE rebate because of all the sh#t I gave them. So today I found one. 1996 Infinity I30t 5spd. I made the guy go out to the car in the yard and give me a trans code off the firewall since I got the shaft last time. Last letter in the code was V, which is the VSLD. I have been hearing that the regular 5 spds come with differential bearing troubles , and havent heard anything about VSLD problems. "crosses fingers" . Cant wait to install this thing......
How many miles on it ?? How much did you get it for..
when I bought mine I got it for $550...I may have to do the bearings in the summer and the hole tranny rebuilt with 60K on it in the long run is going to cost me $1100...not bad considering every other one I looked at was $1300+

Bearings in a lsd going bad?
at only 60k miles?
Possibly, I dont know yet, I wont know till I figure out this leak.
The bearings were shimmed by the same guys the shimmed the Non-LSD trannies. but the LSD bearings are 160$ for the pair instead of $90 for the pair for the non-lsd
When you get the tranny stick both your fingers or hands, into both axle holes..hold them there and try to move the diff side to side (front of the car to the back *well the tranny will be off the car but just invision it*) if the inside moves at all, bearings..I dont know how much movement is OK but i know thats one way to tell...unless you have the money to open up the tranny and check them (while its off the car)

97K miles
The problem looks like it may have started around 60K miles. Looking at the previous owners repair records he first had the drivers side trans-axel seal replaced around 60k. Again a few thousand miles later. Now it is leaking again. A good sign my bearings are bad. It has stoped leaking during the winter, but I think it has to do with the temperature effecting the seal.
I would say that if your going to pay a shop for all this to be done go ahead and replace them, making sure they are shimmed properly. If you are completely capable of pulling the tranny and doing it your self then maybe not. It's a labor cost thing, ya know.
Looking at motorav's how2 wite up for replacing bad bearings, it does not seem like an easy task.

I converted my 5 speed tranny to the VLSD last year due to the dreaded bearing failure, and guess what, yeah you guessed it, bearing failure on the VLSD tranny. Came from a 96 i30t. My advice to you, get the tranny rebuilt or at a bear minimum, get someone to crack it open and check the internals while the tranny is still out. Now i am facing a rebuild...
Good luck
Good luck
I wish I had opened it up and done the bearings..yea its probably another week of it off the road, but your saving alot of money in the long run, most likely given your odds

it's not that hard to crack it open right? After talkin to ericdwong, he told me that you can just take a glance at the bearings from the outside (only 3 are visible w/ just the casing open) to see if there are major chipping/damage.... and also take a look at the magnet to see how much metal shavings are stuck to it.
I am in search for a 5spd tranny here in local yards. Hopefully I will find one w/ low mileage and cross fingers on the diffy bearings
any advice guys??
