MPG gets better when gas gets pricier

Gas is getting pricier and pricier everytime I need to visit the gas staion. It's now over $2 per gallon for just regular in California. In the past weeks, without changing my driving pattern and habit, my gas mileage has been improving. Today, I filled the car up and the last tank averaged 24.7 mpg. Last week it was 24.3, and about 24 the tank before that. Realizing how expensive gas is getting these days, maybe subconsciously I started to watch the way I drive in order to get better gas mileage. Argh.. when will the gas price hike end so I can start enjoying driving again...

i just filled up my tank yesterday and before doing so i checked my mileage to my surprise seeing the highest mileage i can ever remember getting from a full tank of gas, 333 miles! . I traveled to South jersey (i'm in North jersey) a few times and cause of the heavy highway usage, gas lasted more miles...

Shouldn't it be the opposite cause they make it so it burns easier in the cold, thus decreasing MPG. Mine has gone down.....

I just filled up last night and got 470 miles on my last tank (it still had a bit of gas left)...They were all highway miles though (from SC to VA).

i noticed 20+ more miles to the gallon when i went from 93 octane to 94 octane. Would that make a difference, or is a placebo effect?

you people do realize it's the same gas as before? the USA is just "fearing" the war with a major oil supplier. the gas is the same gas, always is. get a grip.

You literally DOUBLED your mpg by going to 94 octane?

damn, and i thought 1.81 for premium was alot. i try and always put 93 if i can, but i can see if your MPG goes up a coupla tenths with 94. Obviously not 20+more MPG..

What might be going on is that because of the high gas prices less people are driving and using alternative methods of transportation. Thus, leaving the roads with less traffic...with less traffic means you don't have to stop and go as much, things are flowing smoother. By not stoping and going as much you use your gas more efficiently.

My 2 cents.

I heard on the news the other morning (from some expert)that there is a difference in winter(colder) and summer(hotter)gas. What? I don't remember but they also stated that Cali starts getting the improved "summer" gas before the rest of the country thus the reasons for the higher prices than the rest of the country(gas here is still $1.80-premium) and the reason why NIXIMA is getting better mileage.

You guys are lucky. I do all city miles, and I only get 18-19 mpg. Now with me being a 17 year old High School student, $1.90 for gas can get pretty hefty. Cost me $22 to fill it a little more than halfway!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard during the summer the gas is treated with chemicals so that it burns cleaner, making less pollution but in turn doesnt burn too well. Gas in the winter is supposed to be better. I've seen premium here in the city well over $2.15.

nah, thats true...they do put some kind of additive in winter time. i remember reading that once...

And he may be actually getting better mileage because of less traffic, or subconciously driving different, etc etc

oops, typo...i meant 20+ miles to the TANK. Although it would be pretty sweet if i could get double MPG by paying 10 cents more per gallon.

The other thing is that i've heard of people getting 400+ miles to the tank. The highest i ever got was 320ish, and that was running the tank dry and driving like a grandma.

Changed fuel filter
got alignment/tire pressure is good
cleaned throttle body
air filter is good

possibly new plugs/clean injectors?
