Brakes squeak when cold

When my car first starts up in the morning and its cold outside, the brakes will squeak when they are applied. They do not squeak under normal driving when they are not being applied, or even when they are applied and the car has warmed up.

Any specific reasons for this? I was told by a mechanic that they had more than 15,000 miles left on them.

Don't worry about it. Sounds like you have a honest mechanic, listen to him.

He seems honest enough.

Not only is he the mechanic, but he's also the man who sold me the car and provides the warranty. =) I do trust him though

I have the same problem. They squeak all the time.
The mechanic said that they were perfectly fine at this point. I still had doubts.
I got it checked from another one last week and he said the same thing so i was like ok...
Now i just drive with them squeaking.

Edit: To clarify, they squeak only when applying the brake.

on your first few stops, the layer of rust is being taken off the rotors, that could be the squeek.
mine does that sometimes as well.
but for braking when they are warm, its quiet.

The squealing that you are hearing is due to the cold weather and a buildup of brake dust, road salt, sand, and other grime that is on the road in the winter. It's perfectly normal. Don't worry about it; once a few good rain showers come and the snow is melted there won't be anymore grit and you won't be getting that annoying sound..
