New starter needed which one to get?

I have a whining/grinding starter (with the fly wheel) and it needs to be replaced but from what I remeber there are 2 different brands or types for the 95 GXE but this is recalling from memory. Also I was wondering anything else I should know like best brand to get etc. etc. Justifying my post with no search feature I would greatly appreciate your help.

I don't mind replacing or repairing my starter on my '96 as well.. that sound when starting the car is quite annoying.

Hmm, wasn't this on the FAQ? I will look again..

I recommend getting your starter from the dealership. I replaced the starter on my 96 last year. I bought one from Autozone at first, put it in and nothing happened. I pulled everything off and reinstalled it thinking I did something wrong but again nothing happened. I finally had to take it to a mechanic who told me some aftermarket starters for some nissans will not work and I would have to go with a Nissan starter. He put it in and the car cranked right up. My advice is to spend the extra cash up front and get a Nissan starter. The job itself is pretty simple.

So, with no search, it needs to be said again:

There is a VERY high probability that there is nothing mechanically wrong with your starter. That noise is a classic symptom of the grease in the starter having turned into a sticky mess. This causes the pinion gear to hang up on it's shaft and not immediately disengage from the flywheel ring gear when the engine begins to turn on it's own. This makes a bad noise. Another symptom of the grease thing is the starter pinion will not move at all and the starter won't crank.

My advise is to remove it from the car and take it apart before buying a new one. It may only need new grease. Mine did.

get yourself a rebuilt starter from pepboys, they all come with warranties, no need to buy a new one for like 3X the price from dealer. if you dont know how to install it, take it to any mechanic, its a one hour job

I recommend any rebuilt one with a lifetime warranty. There will be times in the future where you may have hard starting and will want to rule out the starter...nice to know you can swap it for another at any time. Prices are reasonable. I went with autozone myself.

Edit: don't forget to apply a ground cable while you are at it--it will avoid future problems...trust me.
