Finally drove a 5-speed 4th gen

My *GAWD* its fun!!!!

I actually learned how to drive manual on this car.
To those who always debate about what to get, think of it this way, if you're any type of auto enthusiast, then don't think twice go with the manual. More control, more power, more fun!!!

I LOVE MY AUTO!!! I just get to have a nice relaxing drive every once in a while. Not to mention, an Auto still has alot of power, believe it or not. I race people all the time stock and beat them... even the 5 speeds.

keep telling yourself that....

i know autos are decently quick, have road in one before and was amazed how they run for an auto. Still no competition for my 5sp though Kill my friends 96 every single time...

Keep dreamin' bud! Your stock autotragic Max cannot keep up with the 5-speed. Whoever you raced must've started in 2nd. I have raced a supercharged auto in my Max and beat him but about 1/2 car length. 5-speeds rule!

there's no doubt about it...a 5-sp will destroy an auto 4th gen. I too didn't think that the the tranny would make such a big difference. The 4th gen auto is one of the zippiest cars I've ever driven, I still love coming back to it even after driving my Dad's CL-type S. Its something about the car the combination of the horspeower torque, and wieght of the car that make it more fun to drive.

but after drving the 5-sp, I have to say the tranny makes a HUGE difference in the performance of the car...

Maybe its the fact that early 4th gens weigh a tiick less than later 4th gens, but my friends 96 auto has no problem keeping up with my 99 5sp, i mean i walk him every time, but hes still within 1.5 cars of me till about 45-50. It widens as the speed increases though. Not bad for an auto otherwise stock Max.

I like both Auto and Manual Maximas. The auto has very good consistency in the ¼ mile. The 5spd takes more work to get consistent. I some times get my arss handed to me at the track, because I don’t launch it right. The fun factor obviously goes to the 5spd, that's why I bough one.

Sure there is. Don't know where you live, but if you've spent every day for years in LA traffic to and from work, you'd want an auto tranny.

If you have an auto, you can now use your right hand to flip off the guy that just passed you in a stick.

My SHO was a stick, and it was a blast. I imagine my Max would be too, but since I need left knee replacement surgery and have arthritis in my left hip, I had to buy an auto.

They both have their uses. I've driven both in a Maxima, and love the stick. But I also love the auto at times too. Must be getting old.

as a matter of fact i've owned both already and no one is *****ing about anything. It gets old hearing the same old crap about 5 speeds being so much better. I agree that they are quicker and fun to drive but an auto is still a maxima and I thought this was maxima.org not 5spdmaxima.org

I would venture to guess that you have at least 16s or bigger, and he has the stock 15s. If you both had the same wheels, the difference would be greater.

walk into the light my son..

see everyone always says.. oh i drove a 5spd before.. its no big deal over an auto..

but its not the 5spd vs auto.. its the Maxima 5spd vs Maxima Auto.. its night and day..

the gear ratio.. the torque and horsepower.. it must makes the maxima 5spd that much more amazing

I definitely agree. I just sold my 95 gxe auto and got a 96 SE 5speed. All I can say is, DAMN!!!! It's fast as hell compared to my auto. I brought 1st up to 6500 and shifted to 2nd, and IT KEPT PULLING. HARD! First gear just flies by much faster than my auto. My auto was soo slow compared to 5speed. Really I'm not lieing, it's that much faster. No offense to any auto guys, I used to own one. I suggest all you look for a 5speed. It's worth it.

When I test drove a 5-speed for the first time I knew I could not go on without that power. I sold my 95 GLE and bought a 99 SE 5-speed 2 weeks later. Best decision I've ever made.

I hated my auto soo much I converted to 5spd.

The difference is night and day. The 5spd pulls a LOT harder then the auto, period. There are certain points in the gearing/mph that the auto can hang better, but 90% of the time the 5spd will whip it, and 10% of the time just beat it. First gear is the major difference between the auto and 5spd. The Auto's first gear ratio is 2.3 where as the 5spd's is 3.3. Dropping the clutch at 2500 and squeeling your tires through most of first is a lot different then launching the old auto and being lucky to get a mouse-like squeek.

Damn, lots of work goes into a conversion. More than i would want to do anyways. Is it that you guys cant find 5sps in your area or what (the people who covert)?

I've got one of each. 97 GXE 5-speed and a 2K1 SE Auto. Got the best of both worlds.

David

BTW
the 97 5-speed is faster than the 2K1 even though the 2K1 has 30 more horses.

Ok first of all, whats with all the Auto hating. Im 16, my parents bought the car for me, so I get what I get. Enough with this bull****.

Second, I didnt mean I could pull away from 5speed maximas, I just said alot of 5 speeds in general. Also, I didnt say my auto was the fastest **** on the road, did I? You make it sound like I did. I like my auto for the feel of luxury, and the comfort of not having to worry about shifting. I love 5 speeds, and I ****ing know they are hella fast.

Just to clear things up, I didnt chose my auto over a 5 speed. I had no choice in the matter. When my parents bought me the car, they already knew the advantage of a 5 speed, and they didnt want me having one. They arent exactly the racing type.
