i read all about how the idle speed (RPM) can be changed higher. What does this exactly do? Mine is usually around 600-800...what are the effects of raising it to 1000 RPM idling? are there any disadvantages to that either?

It is for people who's idle speed is at 500 or so. The steering wheel vibrates and the car feels unstable like it is going to stall. Many people have tried adjusting the idle speed screw, but few actually worked.

I wouldn't suggest raising it above spec but if you are planning on adjusting the idle adj screw you'll need to unplug the throttle position sensor (TPS) connector, start the car, warm it let the idle settle and adjust it and then turn off the engine and plug the TPS connector. The spec for your car is 625 manual transmission and 700 automatic transmission. A lot of people try to adjust the idle without unplugging the TPS.

well...

occasionally the steering wheel does vibrate. not just the steering wheel, but the actual car i think. it gives a little jolt, and does it every few seconds sometimes. does anyone think i should raise my idle speed then?

i remember on Steve Cutchen's MaxFAQs, he raised his to 1000. why?

When i unplugged the TPS the car started, then stalled. I've tried several different ways, nothing worked. I am going to clean the throttle body soon...i have heard that may help

To clean the throttle body all you have to do roughly is diconnect the intake hose that leads to the throttle body from the intake box and unbolt the throttle body and spray it down with some carb cleaner and use a toothbrush to clean it of any dirt or grime. Also a few other things you can check are a clogged air cleaner, hoses and ducts for leaks and the EGR valve for proper operation, gaskets and idle switch.
But to go back to the original question The idle was set around 1000 rpms with the TPS sensor unplugged so that when plugged back in would the true idle would be around 800rpm. With the TPS unplugged it should idle a little higher.

so back to my question..

are there any advantages and/or disadvantages of raising your idle speed? or do you only need to do that if it's absolutely necessary?

It should only be necessary if there is increased load on your engine causing the steering wheel to vibrate and possibly engine stalling.

If your idle is rough just clean your TB!!!!

I have tried to adjust the screw several different ways, and it didn't fix my rough idle. I just cleaned my throttle body 3 days ago, and my idle is as smooth as it was when new, so try that first.
