starter problem?

For the past two weeks my car has had a lot of trouble starting , it's a 1996 auto and has 112,000 mi. I got it during the end of the summer and it had the problem but as soon as the cold weather came, it stopped and started fine. However, now that the warm weathers back, it's not starting right again. I have to hold the key down for 5-10 seconds to get it to start 75% of the time. Eventually when it does start, it emits a high pitched squeel and the rpm meter goes crazy and then finally balances out. Im assuming it's the starter. My dad had the same problem in his honda and the starter was burnt and it cost 300 to replace it. If the starter is what's causing my problem, is it easy to install cuz i can find the cheaper online than it would cost a mechanic to do it. thanks guys

thanks for the fast reply sprint max, but i was already there and i believe that just fixes the squeel and it won't bring my starter back to life if it is my starter thats causing the problem.

its fairly easy to change.. not sure if thats the problem though

yea at autozone they have the starter for a 96 maxima for $139.99, but with a core charge of $45... does this mean i have to pay $45. I don't understand what core charge means. Can i just buy the starter without the core?

core means ither you carry your old starter in there and don't pay the $45.. or you pay the $45 extra and you get it back when you bring them your old starter
