If the purpose of shifting the tranny manually to get the best performance out of the engine is desired then I think that is just a waste of time. If not mistaken the tranny shifts at a point where the engine is starting to loose it,s power or at a point where it senses that the engine is "straining itself" to where going any higher in RPM,s is pointless. The purpose of having different shift positions on an automatic is in case you happen to be pulling heavy loads or are in a position to where a lower (stronger) gear is needed. I don,t know if this helps but I try. If quickness is what you are looking for, you should have done what I should have done......buy a 5 speed!
