Dual exhaust advice (to muffle or not to muffle)

I'm planning on doing a 3 inch dual exhaust very soon (tax return next week). I'm doing 3 inch cause i'm gonna turbo this summer definitely and i want to have everything ready ahead of time. Its all gonna be custome and i got a friend who's gonna do my welding. I know to make a dual i'll have to bang out the spare tire well, and i'm perfectly fine with that. If i blow a tire i've got AAA. I know that it would be alot easy to go with straight pipes out the back with nice tips and the look would be there, but that brings me to the question of sound. How obnoxiously loud would that be? I'm thinking that it would get me pulled over every 2 blocks. Anyone done this. Well that brings me to my real question. I was thinking about doing a Single exhaust where my Cat is and splitting off the pipes from the exhaust back. It'll save me money cause i won't need 2 buy 2 exhaust and i'm figuring it'll help a bunch with the sound. What do you guys think? Good idea bad idea? you got a better idea? Oh and keep in mind i'm in florida and we don't have emissions here, so i'm not worried about not having a cat. (as a matter of fact i haven't had one for a year now).

PLEASE muffle.

I didn't bang my tire well at all. Didn't have to relocate the infamous 'black box' either.

Yes, I have 3" exhaust.

I have a VI, turbo, and intercooler on my floor in the office. No time to install now... and won't for awhile.

I'm ordering larger injectors and a fuel pump.

I have BIG Plans... BIG Plans...

Wait till I drop my 5th gen 2k3 HID photo bombshell...

Yes, but I'll only show the back for now... I'm getting more work done (you can see the gaps in the back of the body)

Word of advice - DON'T buy JT Autostyle Products

The 2k3s are test fitted and in, but I'm waiting for phase 2 fenders before having them completely installed.

My entire interior is out expet the drivers seat.

If you want UGLY pics ('cept the front) I'll post if you want.

AgaricX, your ide is hot ta death. I guess great minds think alike because once i got my gen 2 altezzas i was going to paint them exactly like you did for more of a custom look. i was hoping that i had the chance to do it first but i aint mad at cha. if you dont mind me asking, what kind of mufflers are those, i never thought dual twin tip exhaust would look good on a max but you proved me wrong. to be honest i didnt see any gaps in the bumper till you mentioned it, now i see it under the outer lights but still, you got a hot ride. do you mind posting a pic of the back, not from an angle but centered

My Duals actually have 1 crossflow muffler, 1 input 2 outs. The second output wraps around the tire well. Just the same as a Camaro.
here is a pic of my setup

Well my shorts have been creamed...God thats so beautiful i want to cry. So what your saying is you have double dual mufflers and 3 inch all the way back? They look sweet. I kinda like those more than i like singles, but i think they only look good with a body kit. And thats one hell of a kit you've got there. I guess i'll go with dual mufflers then. I really like the muffler i've got now but its only 2.5 so i'll probably have to get 2 new ones.

Yup. It sounds SO much better than any import I have EVER heard... I may be a bit biased... but I really think that.

more pics yet? Is your setup really loud, and if so what can you do to muffle a dual exhaust, put a really big rsonator in it, or could you fit 2 in?

No, There really isn't room for 2... I jusy have one 3" resonator.

It's not near as IRRITATINGLY loud as most of the Hon-Duhs with their big-*** fart cans and ebay bolt-ons.

It ALMOST as mellow as my 5.7L and 4.6L V8 Fieros, just not as loud. I get LOTS of looks when I'm cruising in 3rd at ~2000RPM. Its super mellow and just loud enough to turn heads.

I don't have a sound clip... but I'm going to have an 'unveiling' on my company website when it's done. I'll get a sound clip sooner or later... it's too much trouble right now. Maybe after the weekend.

AgaricX... that looks damn fine. Can't wait to see the rest of the pics. That is the JT rear? Do you have any side shots of it? I'm looking to replace my ugly ionic 2pc rear but I'm not sure how that would line up with it. How did you fit two mufflers in there, without banging the spare tire well or moving the black box?

Yes they do suck. And small Domestic 2 chambered mufflers are more farty then the import cans, and less raw. Just stick a big ebay can under there and call it a day, it will make your car sound exactly like a Mustang Cobra at any RPM!!

The pipes actually go under the box/well. The JT bumper is low enough to cover. IT actually lines up perfect.

i dont usally rip on peoples cars but.. it just seems like there is to much "flare" on that max, I think its just the wing is to fugly and the back bumper is chub. i would still give it like 8 out of 10 though

I'm one of the biggest anti-rice, pro-domestic ****'s on this board, and I think AgaricX's car looks beautiful. I showed my even more rice-prejudiced friend with a '96 Impala SS a pic of his car and he thought it was tight.

Face it, the car is really good looking. The tails, we werent too fond of but for altezza's they don't come any sexier. The wing compliments the quads and kit nicely. Overall, his car get's a huge from me.

Wait till it's smoothed and filled. It'll look a lot cleaner and more natural.

yesh..

I think I am one of 2 people with actually dual mufflers, you can do piping and no mufflers quite easily, it's when you come to adding mufflers under there and not just tips that you run into issues.

My setup isnt too loud, when its cold its loud but after that it's pretty smooth, although I still run the stock cat and 2.5" piping all the way around all mandrel bent.

agaricx - good luck with cleaning up JT autostyle's kit and getting the 2k3 lights to look right on a 4th gen.

that car looks great. 2 questions.

i have altezzas, but not gen 2, should i paint them black like my car, or spend the money to get red/clear?

i was thinking about duals as well, is it worth it? how can i run 2 functional tail pipes without loosing hp and having to do a lot of bending, and pounding of the spare well and such?

I'm sorry but do you people even looked under your car?? Its not that hard to understand how this would go about. you can get a camaro set up which will have one muffler and two pipes coming from it or a slpit and two mufflers. Yes is most cases the spare wheel well would get in the way, thats a price of doing something custom. Or you can always wait for custommaxima to comeout with his dual exhaust and there you go...

yup, i was gonna do the same thing. That is until i decided against the noise issues. But thats about the best way to do a dual on a max, camaro style muffler.......

Yup. Either get a Camaro Flowmasters 80-series like me, or get a WS6 turbo muffler like Kashaggio (which is quieter I believe) and sit it in the normal muffler spot. The muffler is soo thin that it cannot be seen, especially with any kind of body kit. Then hook a pipe to the muffler's other outlet and run it around the tire well. It's really easy to do and will look very clean.

Just go to a local custom exhaust shop and talk to them about it. Here are some pics of my car, hopefully they will help whoever wants to do duals out, and give them a better understanding of the camaro style setup:

I dunno, man... It looks like a Honda Accord V6 now... The red/clears and the single pipe duals.

I bet it sounds good though.

Nope. They have dual mufflers with the tips at the very ends of the bumper. So not like an Accord at all.

msmokey3: Dude, did you read what I just posted? How about looking at the pics? They answer your questions completely. As for the black box, i'm a '95 and don't have that problem. It's my understanding that it's an easy move though. Just bolt the **** somewhere else.

Kashaggio, what size tips are you running? I'm running 3.5"W x 6"L chrome round.

Absolutely nothing like an Accord. I feel like reiterating this again:

Accord:
-Dual mufflers at extreme ends of bumper
-Puny tips
-Not like Camaro style setup at all
-No bumper cutouts (to my knowledge)

Camaro Maximas:
-Single muffler
-Nice sized tips
-Almost identical to camaro style setup
-Bumper cutouts

Oh, I have no doubt the transverse Max look MUCH better. It just reminds me of the Accord... or the Acura TL for better reference. I just have a Honda aversion. Yours looks way better, though.

why the hell do people think just because we have red clears and some have a dual setup it looks like an accord? you people are obviously vision impaired, the rear of a max looks NOTHING REMOTELY SIMILAR to a damn accord of ANY year.
