Sumis vs yokos, sizes, and how to prevent bent rims

I am in the process of buying 18s and i just wondered that with an 18x8 wheel if 235/40 or 245/40 is the better size for looks and/or preventing bent or broken rims. Where i live there are plenty of potholes...does the extra thickness of the sidewall from a 245/40/18 tire make that much of a difference when you're driving? if i bend my new rims ill probably flip out.

Also does the stiffness of your spring shock combo make a difference when worrying about bent rims? I want eibachs because I thin they look the best but from what I understand they are stiff. i will also prob just keep the oem springs because I have an se and I dont feel like spending money on shocks/struts, if i was tho id probably go kyb agx or gr-2, any comments on those is appreciated.

One last thing i hear great things about the sumitomo htr+ (but i dont know if i like the look of their tread pattern...and yokohama es100(i think thats what they are) they are both cheap and all season high performance, anyway any comments on that would be appreciated.
