Mods avail for Higher MPG

Get a 5-speed transmission if you don't have one.
Just face it, a torque-y engine will not give you good fuel economy. It's the trade-off for driving excitement. That's what Nissan VQs are good for, otherwise get a 4 cylinder QG18 or a Civic.

At highway cruising speeds, a manual transmission equipped 4th gen will rev higher than an automatic, but one can't praise the efficiency of the autotragics during the non-overdrive gears (shifting, city, etc). Also, a manual transmission relies on the driver's expertise on using the clutch efficiently. But you will not be able to get that much of an improvement.

MPG really has to do with the load on your engine. if you are in a high gear but there is a lot of load on your motor, your MPG is going to suffer. but if you are going the the same speed at a higher rpm, in a lower gear (like from 5th to 4th), there will be less load on your engine. with extra load on your motor, it is compensated with more fuel. (i.e. towing a boat... going the same speed... same rpm... but a great deal of extra weight... most times will cut your mpg in half due to the extra strain of the weight) i know this isn't an exact description, but i've learned some of this by watching the instant mpg reading on my girlfriends Audi. so if you can free up your cars breathing... loose some weight... and don't floor your car, especially in high gears...ect... you're mpg can increase.
