omg don't tell me my transmission it going!!!

Right so I have had the following happen ever since I changed the engine. It's random, sometimes stronger sometimes subtle mostly non existent but defenitely unpleasant. Till today i've ignored it as a suspension issue (it feels like one).

Basically sometimes, while accelerating in first (auto) at low speeds i would feel a hop from the front transmission side. It almost feels like a torn mount or a skipping bearing. Mounts its not, so today I brought the car in for suspension work. While there I told about that problem to one of the mechanics and he's like 'oh your transmission is ****slipping****'. That ruined my day. I am just wondering what is the actual chance of that happening?

here is why i don't *think* its slipping:

1. only happens in 1st gear, even more so accelerating after a stop.
2. it's random
3. the transmission behaves completely healthy. shifts through all gears like new and there aren't any weird noises, or leaks (just some sweating lately but i was told that is normal. it doens't drip or anything).
4. Fluid was changed recently.. its the right fluid.

What you guys think? That's my first auto car (ain't it obvious..) and i am going pale at the thought of the transmission failing next. And if it is slipping, can i expect it to get worse or completely fail within 6 months? I am too scared to even press the gas now... I just need that car to not crash and burn till july.. its not too much to ask is it

the mechanic said it was slipping?

when i hear slipping (that's what my car is doin now), the clutch is worn down and needs replacement. of course, that would be a problem only 5-spds would have.

btw- **** what mechanics say. if they don't drive it and hear it, they will not know what the problem is. I've talked to mechanics about my tranny problem and all of them have told me different theories. One of em even said it was a problem w/ my tires! sucks to have bad diffy bearings!

exactly.. they all like to say things. i suppose i'll just drive and see what happens. weird thing is it happens only in gear (shifts are a-okey), and in first. if something is worn/broken i suppose it's just 'skipping' in the fluid

I can't offer you much expertise on transmissions, and I agree with the other responses about mechanics liking to say things. But I can tell you from recent previous experience that you may be in trouble.

A few weeks ago, my 1990 toyota camry's transmission pooped out for good. and for two days prior to its last breath, it had very similair symptoms. When idling, and/or going from idling to accelerating, i.e. first gear, it would all of a sudden kinda jerk forward, eventually it would jerk and stall out. Finally two days after it started, it did it one last time, and stalled out, and then everytime i would try to put it back in gear, it would stall out, then eventually went into gear and did nothing...for those two days, all the rest of driving was just fine, went through all the gears with no problems, ran great.

So don't be fooled by the lack of other problems...this could be bad. Also, from what I understand, a transmission problem, if not taken care of, usually continues to get worse. So I would say, if you want your car to last longer, get this fixed asap.

Then again, I had a very old, very high mileage car...so maybe its different for you...hope this helps.
