Problem in Maxima 95 -- Please Help

Hello Maxima owners,
I have 95 maxima gxe with 62,000 miles. When I am driving, sometimes suddenly the Battery light and the Break light glows up. This goes away after some time if I continue to drive. I took it to the dealer to check what the problem was. The dealer could not reproduce the problem that I told him. So the dealer could not fix the problem. This happens once in a while, some times every day and goes away. Does anyone has come across this problem and if so, what was the remedy for it.

Thanks
maxowner3

That happened to me before my alternator went out.

You need a new alternator for sure. Make sure that they check out the battery too when you get a new alternator, because there might be undue strain on the battery right now due to the weak alternator.

You may not need a new alternator FOR SURE. You may have a belt that's going bad, so the alternator isnt spinning properly. This happened on my friends car the other night. Check all the belts before you buy a new alternator.

too bad you don't have a 97 like me...
i got my alternator replaced on my car yesterday

FOR FREE ahahaha!
the way to see if your alternator is bad, is start the car, and then open the hood...get a MultiMeter and set it to volts...place the red tester on the red battery terminal (der!) and the black on black...then advace the throttle from the engine bay, while the engine is revving, you should read at LEAST a 13.5 from the battery if your alternator is workin properly, if its less than that, you need to check your belts, and if they are ok, you got a bad alternator...there is also always the chance that if it is not the alternator, you have a battery that isn't holding charge well
hope this was helpful

Isn't there a way to check the alternator to see if its still "alive" or not by starting your car, then disconnecting the red power terminal form the battery (leave the negative connected). If the car stays on then the alternator is working, if the car shuts off, then the alternator is dead or soon to be dead, and all your accessories on the car are using the power from the battery. That was the ghetto way that I used when I had my 86 mustang, since I did not have a multimeter (and still dont!). Worked every time
