I can hear a clunking sound also when I go over bumps. It sounds like it is coming from that side. Could someone tell me what might be going on? All opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Fred

clunking is usually due to incorrect install of springs and struts.. maybe you need an alignment and balancing as mentioned before

I thought we only got front wheel alignments. Will this help the rear? I will get the tires rotated and balanced. What about ball joints? Are they possibly a culprit?

my thoughts....

The rear axle beam is not adjustable on 4th gen's I think....

There probably are minor adjustments they can make but I'm pretty sure the rear can't really be aligned they way the front can.

What you should check is, see if the rear Axle beam is bent, see if you have look at the car on a lift.

Have you been rotating your tires?

Maybe the front is out of alignment and the ware you now see is actually happening when that tire was on the front end.

The noises do indicate something isn't right back there.

If the rear shock was bad you'd get a bouncy ride and bumps would impact pretty harshly. But being the beam is solid and the alignment is fixed, the tire still wouldn't ware on one side. Only the ride would be effected and the tread may become cupped.

If indeed that tire is waring on one side while it's on the rear of the car, have a shop put the car on an alignment rack to see whats off or loose in the rear end.

Yes, and to add, most tire wear occurs when your tires are on the front. The rears are just chillin'. It would take a really really long time for uneven wear to show up on the back if you don't rotate your tires at all. Perhaps your front end needs the alignment, assuming you rotated the tires regularly , Maxfan.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I will get my suspension looked at ASAP and have the tires rotated and my front end alignment done.

Clunking sound= Dead shock, wrecked mounts/bushings, broken spring.

Inner tire wear= Faulty tire(unlikely) or Bent rear suspension. No adjustments possible. Replace parts as needed.

A little 5mph slide on snow into a curb sideways a few years ago really wrecked my suspension.... it doesn't take much going sideways....
