My Rotors Are Very Thin...Help!!

My brakes have been making very weird noises lately, i noticed that on all four of my brakes it seemed that my pads were ok but my rotors were very thin and worn. My braking has become weaker, so what should i do? I would love to get aftermarket slotted or drilled rotors, but i dont have crazy money. Would it be cheaper to just go to the dealer and have them do it. Please help me out on some good sites or recommendations for me. Thanx guys

www.southwestautoworks.com has some brembo with slots/drilled for a good price. if they are not that bad then you can just get them resurfaced and new pads

How do you know they are to thin? Did you measure them with a micrometer?

The minimun thickness (measured in mm) of the rotor is usually found cast into the rotor somewhere. The Haynes manual doesn't have the measurement.

My rotors are completely rusted wherever the pad does not come into contact with the rotor. Does anyone know what the min. thickness is?

All rotors are made of cast iron. Rust is normal.

Cast iron + heat + water = rust

Cast iron + heat + water + salt = more rust

When you replace the pads, get the rotors turned at a good machine shop. They'll shave off a wee bit and return the surface to like new. Or like the man said just get four new solid Brembo blanks and you're stylin. They'll still rust. Don't bother with cross-drilling or slotting, that's stupid on a street car and does weaken the rotor. Unless you like the way it looks it's not going to make you stop any faster.

Oh yeah, they use lots of salt in the winter where I am!

I was told by my mechanic my rotors are too thin to machine. I've got 4 new ones in the basement (2 brembo fr., 2 discounted oems rear) + new front pads. Now I just have to find time.

A buddy here wanted to measure the thickness of his rotors with my micrometer so I wanted to know what the min. thickness is.

It should be stamped right on the rotor near the hub. Sometimes it rusts off though....

I was able to read the min. thickness #s off from my new rotors that are still boxed. From Brembo fronts (20mm) & oem rears (8mm).

rustless...

PowerSlot rotors come cadmium plated so the Hat and rotor edge don't rust. They are one and a half times more expensive than the other mentioned brand... Just finished installing a complete set today.

I think the problem in machining is because of the uneven surface with x-drilled and slotted rotors rather than the fact the rotor is Cd-plated.

Never buy drilled rotors for street use, but slotted and dimpled are a great idea IMO.

This is the 4th gen forum, so why would you post about the thickness of a 6th gen?

I see three fails here.

You fail for the following reasons:
  1. This is a 6 year old thread.
  2. This is the 4th gen subforum, where an '07 is obviously out of place.
  3. Discard for the A34 front brakes is 1.02 inches. Not before turning, but whenever they pass the discard, they are to be...discarded.

Look before you post next time.
