90,000 miles on a set of brakes?

Is this possible? How long do they typically last?

Yes it is

I just bought a 96 SE 5-speed from my friend and the front breaks and rear brakes have 96,300 on it and still have at least 30% left so I will say yes it is very possible!

Depends on use

If the car was driven up and down the streets of, say, San Francisco for all it's life, the brakes would be short-lived. Conversely, if it's mostly freeway miles, they may last 200K. My fronts were getting down enough to replace them at 90K. The rears still looked fine, but they may have been replaced as I'm not the original owner. But I suspect the rears last a lot longer than the fronts as the fronts take most of the braking load.

Also, some people seem to use brakes much more often than they need to. Those who closely follow the car in front often have to brake a lot to keep from hitting. And many people seem to hit the brakes on every turn, no matter how gentle it is.

Re: Depends on use

Also, brakes on a 5-speed last longer than on an automatic. I had to change brakes on my automatic at 45,000 miles.

Very possible! I changed my fronts at 92k. Would have lasted longer, but the rotors were warped and beat up the pads due to this fact. I have 145k on the car, and still have the original rears.

Wow, thanks for the responses guys--I kind of inherited a 96 Maxima to sell and the records never showed a brake change. I thought it must have just been misplaced or something, but apparently not. (It is a 5-sp too).

Hard to believe pads could last that long.

If I were to do a full brake job (rotors and pads), how much should it run at a reasonable dealership?

(sorry for the newbie questions)

dont go to the delaership, you can very easily change the brakes your self, a dealership would rape you on the cost, and on the parts
