brake problem, please help
brake problem, please help
Well, I am an idiot.
I drove an hour and a half back to my parents house today, and decided to change my brakes, a quick last minute decision, and opened my clutch cap and not my brake cap. Then, I see a puddle underneath my car after finishing. Is my master cylinder gone? If it is can I get a repair kit from Nissan ASAP? Finally, can I do it myself??(not usually this careless)
And Yes, I am furious at myself. Go light on the salt, the wound is fresh.

A side note:
Never add brake fluid unless you have a leak. The system is designed to have all four pads bottomed out and still have enough fluid. Adding fluid just gives you the problem you have now when you recompress those pistons...
And while we're at it:
Completely bleed and replace all brake fluid at least every 3 years or 60,000....

I think I blew a seal.
But, seriously. . .
1) Have you determined the source of the leak? Was it coming from the brake master cylinder?
Have you removed the wheels and had a look at the calipers?
Had a close look at the brake master cylinder?
Check for external brake fluid leaks first.
If you find none, you may just need to bleed the brakes.
Sounds like when you compressed the caliper pistons to accomodate the new, thicker brake pads, you simply forced the brake fluid to overflow from the master cylinder, as the pistons pushed fluid out of the calipers and back into the lines.
This shouldn't have damaged anything.
Did you already attempt to bleed the brakes? Did you loosen any of the bleed valves on the calipers at any point?
Your sypmptoms are those of a brake system that has had air introduced to it.

Yes, first check underneath each caliper and under the master cylinder. If there are NO leaks what-so-ever, then you just have air in the system. However, if you think you have found a leak, add more fluid to the reservoir and pump it up. Do this until you start to see fluid come out of the suspected area......
One of the seals? We need pics.
I still don't understand how you could wreck a master cylinder by pushing back the caliper pistons with hand tools. It'd just leak out of the top. But whatever. Clean it up, and bleed each caliper from scratch. Still no pressure?

Perhaps the cover on the master cylinder was tight enough that the fluid couldn't leak out, thus a seal was blown. If this is the case, master cylinder must either be replaced or rebuilt and all 4 brakes bleed.
I hate CarQuest or at least the guy there.
I ordered a NABCO and he tried to give me a TOKICO, well O'Reilly will have it in the morning. I am just going to replace it, being that I am missing days from work cause of this. Seems like brake bleeding and replacement are going to be the only way.
Thanks
