12 MPG?????? What is wrong here
12 MPG?????? What is wrong here
I decdied to do a little test, so I drove the other day until the car was almost about to die. The gas needle was on the bottom portion of the empty line. I decided to put 5 gallons exactly of premium gas in. I resetted the tripometer. Couple of days later, I'm on 42 miles driven, and almost empty. From experience, it looks like I can drive about 20 miles more on the rest of the tank (to and from school). That gives me a total of 62 miles more or less. Thats 12 miles to the gallon! My cel is throwing no codes (0505). My fuel filter ha sbeen changed (Factory new), spark plugs have been changed (NGK Plats), oil was changed recently, air filter is somewhat new, and I have a new knock sensor. I got a code for the rear heated o2 sensor once, but it went away and never came back. If it was one of the front o2 sensors then I would think that was the problem, but I havent gotten a cel for them. I belive they are the stock o2 sensors, so I will be trying to clean them soon (when I get the tools). Also, my car jerks in idling, and I have felt a loss of power. Almost hesitating, and is not smooth at all. The only thing I can think of is something with the fuel injector. What do you guys think? This sucks =(
I'd say you measured wrong. It's hard to measure from the bottom of the tank, so measure it from the top.
Fill it all the way up, drive around a few days taking note of the mileage, then fill it up and take note of how many gallons you filled it with. Miles/gallons = MPG. Generally it's the best when you use the whole tank and take a measurement, then you get the average over a longer set of miles.

that sounds exactly like what happend to my old 90 max. no power and crap for gas mpg. i had to replace all 6, they just go one after the other. if you really want to know, on my 90 we just took out the distributor wires off the spark plugs one by one and when we pulled the bad one off it made no difference how the car ran. when we pulled off a good one the engine would shake pretty violently.
now since our cars are distributorless i would guess you just have to unplug the (coils?) i think they are called
good luck

Fill your tank up with premium gas and reset your trip meter. Drive till your just about empty and fill up again. Take note on the gallons of gas it takes to fill up. Divide your mileage by the gallons of gas and you'll get your MPG.
You can't accurately measure it with 5 gallons of gas in a near empty tank.

I can barely get to 250mpt for the full tank, I drive 60% city, 40% highway.. That sounds like the problem there, but the max used to be 90% highway 10% city, and it was getting close to or even 400mptMPT= Miles per tank

City driving for me is very stop and start and I at least get 15-17. I don't know how some of you guys get >20 in the city.

I only get like 15 mpg....i full up my tank(93) and then drive till i feel uncomfortable, and the needle is on E (my gas light NEVER comes on!) and then i averaged (i have done this several times) and came up with 15 mpg!!!! once and a while if i rev my car high, i get a front O2 sesor code, so i assume this is the problem?

I have a 97 SE 5 speed, completely stock, 88k miles.... I can easily go over 400 miles to a tank if I want to. I generally fill up around 375 or so, drop roughly 15 gallons in... generally 24.5-25mpgs. Generally use premium, not all the time. Driving is 60% urban, 40% highway. Usually measure mpg's everytime I fill up, never been below 23ish... On highway during trip, its around 27-28. This is my second Maxima, had a 95 auto before, was getting similar mpg's.

I have a more general question. This milage problem, while occasionally solved with o2 sensor stuff or knock sensor stuff, is sometimes harder to diagnose. Is this a Maxima problem that other cars dont have such a problem with? Also, is there possibly a single problem that can be to blame for many of these milage issues? I cant help but notice that in many of these types of threads, there are very similar symptoms to these problems, anyway, thas all

I just realized that I usually put between 12-13 gallons of gas each fillup, so Im guessing I have another 50 miles on the gas thats still in there?
