i got a rattling noise since i had my y pipe put on

i can't seem to trace the noise. i don't think it's coming from the y pipe itself. it sounds like it's comong after the cat like maybe the pipe is rattling against the heatshield. anyone else get a rattling noise?
i have a 95 5speed with a stillen cat-back on it and it's a budget y pipe

How would it be coming from behind your catback and be
rattling against your oil pan?

Are your o2 reinstalled correctly?

make sure to look under your car, almost directly behind ur cat, and u will see a little cross member that is under the exhaust to prevent it from moving too much. If the sound is more of a clunk directly under you that is the problem. Thats what happend with mine but mine was engine back all the way exhaust so it could be different fitment. But like i said, check to see if the clearance is still good between the little bridge piece right behind the cat. I took mine off and no sound anymore

it's not a horrendous sound and since i've never had a y pipe or heard a max with one it may be a normal sound. it sounds like thin metal buzzing. i wish i could bring one of you guys on a ride with me to hear it. i only really hear it when i stomp the gas. does anyone have a link to a vid of a max with a y pipe so i could tell

Now that you put it that way...it may be the ypipe flex section.
I get a bit of buzzing. Is it one of those deals where you hear it
alot clearer w/the windows down and going by a wall or something.

My budget ypipe does buzz a bit.
Not bad, but it does buzz. And it's when I put the gas in hard.

Exhaust wrap

If you go and buy some exhaust wrap and wrap the entire Y pipe, including flex section, it should fix the problem.

intstructions are there

Would there also be comperable noise reduction by wrapping the b-pipes and muffler you think?

Kinda.
I think maybe the exhaust wrap thing'll work though.
I don't know if you've got an intake but combined together
it's not that bad. Does your exhaust kinda 'blub, blub, blub' when
you first start it now? Mine does a bit, but again, I kinda like that
too.

exhaust wrap does work, but keep in mind, if you wrap the flex section too tightly ur asking for trouble. the key word is "flex" if you wrap it too tight and dont allow it to expand it puts the pressure on the welds on each end of the flex instead of the center and can cause it to literally pop off or clog up or get loose.

My WSP Y- pipe did the same thing. I jacked it up and put heavy load on the motor with the brakes on (don't do this) anyway the Y-pipe would jump about an inch to the left anytime heavy load was applied and the flex section would hit the heat shield (this caused a rattling that seemed to come right under the shifter.) The flex section is on their for a reason, just look under your car and imagine your pipe has to have about an inch and a half of clearence around it, bend everything out of the way that conflicts with this. I would really look into getting it fixed because I would think over time it would cut into your flex section.

it definitely blubs, but i like that sound. I have a weapon -r WAI with carbon fiber pipng but since i put the y on, in 1st and most of 2nd you can't hear it, the exhasut kinda overpowers it. ther were a few points where it contacted the hea shield and the actual frame of the car, but it was my b pipe moving more due t the air the y let through. everything's cool now, i spent most of yesterday afternoon under the car with heat shields and wrap and it's all good.

Nice.
How much of a pain was it to wrap?
How much $$$ was the wrap??
And did it quiet down the hiss/rattle?

it was pretty easy to wrap. i didn't even take the pipe off i just jacked the front of the car up and wrapped some of the pipe then jacked up the back and did more. i didn't wrap the whole thing. just places where i saw the pipe had already scraped from contact and places i was skeptical of clearance on and i put the 1/8" rubber heat-resistant guard things between the pipe nd wherever it rubbed at. i don't know how much the wrap or the shields were cuz i had a bunch lying around the house from when i had the butt-holes at U-haul put a hitch on my other car and they did a crappy job. i know it was pretty cheap though.

im not a mechanic, so if this info is useless blame it on that fact.. the way i understand it is that after a while your ypipe can get loose from expansion , you could stop back by and have everything tightened up again . i did this once a week for three weeks ... all is well ..
