When I get my 1996 Se 5spd maxima I want to have ready in my garage to put on a CAI, Y-PIPE. My question is does the y-pipe change the sound of the stock exhaust.

yes it will...

the jet-hot coating will yield more noise than the SS version...to avoid the increase in noise...use header wrap on the Y....

It really depends on which ypipe you get.

The Cattman stainless (which I have) hardly makes any sound but is more expensive.

The Stillen's makes a lot more. Although I hear that the new stillen 2 peice design is a little quieter.

Take a look here:

You may find some other info of use.

Yes it will. But not for the reasons that most people think. The type of material doesn't matter. ss, Jet Hot, mild steel, aluminized steel. Whatever.

The single most important thing about the Y pipe for noise is the design of the FLEX PIPE. If it's unlined(like the old cattman Jet-Hot ones were and like the Stillen ones I think) it will be noisy. If you get one w/ a better quality flex section that is LINED, it will be VERY quiet.

I spent alot of $, to find the above out the hard way. Trust me on this. For which every Y you decide to get, you #1 question to the vendor should be, "Do you use a lined flex section or not?".

I asked 3 major exhaust distributors (vendors) if they ever heard of a lined flex connector and they said no. They said the flex joint with the multi layered stainless braided wire with the stainless corrugated liner is the only flex joint on the market, they said the number of layers of braided wire varies. They said there are of course several manufacturers of them, some good and some not so good. We actually get ours from Canada, they are the best quality we have found. If there is a lined flex joint send the info and we will check it out. They said the biggest difference is how much space is in between the braided stainless wire and the corrugated liner, too much and it vibrates.
