How to read out CEL code? ? ? ?
I have a 99 SE 5speed with 55K miles, and the service engine soon light came on. I am trying to read out the code, but my ECU does not match the Haynes manual picture. I removed the plastic covering the hole where there is supposed to be a slotted screw. But instead of a screw, there is some strange **** with tiny teeth on it, and it is not even centered exactly behind the hole. Also, above it on the label it say 'idle speed adjust'. There is another tiny hole to the right of that larger hole that seems to be labelled 'self-diagnostic', but it is very small and I can't tell what is behind it. What gives? How can I read out the code?

You want to use the hole labelled self diagnostic. DOn't touch that idle speed adjust! Funny, my friend has a 99 and his ECU doesn't look like how you described.

After checking with a mirror and flashlight, I could see that the toothed wheel is around the outside of the screw for the diagnostic readout (it is actually a tiny slotted screw, although it is very hard to see it). I was able to read out the code.. Maybe that toothed wheel is for some kind of idle adjust with some special tool or something? Anyway, I got a code 0510, which seems to be pointing to the rear O2 sensor. I reset it for now, if it comes back, I may change the sensor...
