You should be using a 10W-30 or 5W-30 oil, not 10W-40.

The three top oils are:

Castrol GTX Convnetional
Mobil 1 Tri Synthetic
Amsoil Synthetic

And oil won't affect your 'performance' enough to notice.

Yes it is safe.

Amsoil is sold by other members of the Amsoil cult. They do make good oil but they scare me....

i heard that you should not use synthetic in a high milage engine unless you have been using it b/c of the differences in how the oil molcules are shaped. The synthetic can slip by worn out rings and burn, there are different opinions on this matter though.

So the question is

What is considered "HIGH MILES". We know that all cars are not created equally. These days, with 80k some would say that Nissans are just getting broken in if it has been well maintianed. There are so many people on each end of the spectrum on this one. Well I just changed over to synthetic at 82,000 miles on Friday, so if any leaks occur, I'll let everyone know.

Whats the procedure for switching your oil? Do I just drain the old oil and add the new one or do I need to drain the old oil then run some clean and then add the new one?

also heard switching to synthectic when u never had it in your high milege vehicle is no good , because it is more likely to leek threw worn valves/gaskets/etc.

100000 miles is not high mileage for a nissan maxima, try maybe 275 thousand

I've spoken to some tech's who work in the oil industry. Here's what they had to say: Conventional oil can build up sludge, which over the course of many thousands of miles can build up on the seals and help to prevent oil leaks by causing the seals to swell up a bit. When you change over to a full synthetic, it actually breaks down and removes this sludge from those seals. This in turn can cause the seals to sometimes leak. Now; what constitutes high milage? If you have been using a good oil and filter and changed them often (~3K miles) I would think that 100K is alright to change over to a full synthetic; however, once you make the change it is NOT a good idea to switch back to dino oil. As you know full synthetic costs much more, but they are MAXIMAS, right?

i dont think it really matters all that much to switch to synthetic unless you dont change your oil evry 3000.. yeah they lube better but the real benefit with synthetics is that they lube better under extream conditions such as goign more than like 5k without a change, and always runnign at redline. if you change your oil every 3k you should be cool running any oil. just go full dino or full syn..i hear the blends suck a** .we are all "enthusiast" here on the org so we go all nuts about every detail on products. but there are maximas out there with 150k-200k owned by older folk who have never seen oil better than the base dino oil and get their oil changed at jiffy lube every 4k(who use pretty crappy valvoline oil) and are still running great. all oils now are SL and up graded..that is liek 2 grades better than what nissan recommends in the owners manual..i use mobil one synthetic myself at 105k... no leaks. hope this helps..dma it was long..

Excellent explanation! I don't see any issue with switching back to dino oil though. What harm could come of it?

Edit:
I just re-read this explanation. The seals don't swell up after the sludge surrounds them, they actually dry up an crack. When the sludge, which acts as a false seal, is removed by the extra detergency in a synthetic the oil will seep through the old damaged seals.

So Amsoil is good oil, but the people who sell it scare you??? I was thinking about changing my 5speed tranny fluid to Amsoil synthetic at 60k. Is this a good move?

Yes it is a good move.

Mark ( member iwannabmw ) is a top Amsoil seller here and isn't one of those scary ones that seem to plague most Amsoil re-sellers.
