At idle, my car makes a kind of sound that looks like a whistle? I'm 100% sure it's not the belts. Over 1200 rpm, i don't hear anything. At 700 rmp i heard it but sometimes it dissapear? Can someone could help me with that? Water pump?

My water pump went out this week, it was proceeded by a bad coolant leak no sounds. Now that it's totally gone, it whine's like a ***** after driving for 5-10 minutes and the car overheats. When your water pump goes you'll know trust me just watch that engine temperature gauge.

Could it be your belts?
Does it usually happen on startup?

Dude I feel your pain!!! I have the same annoying noise buuuuuttt......

I FOUND WHERE ITS COMMING FROM!!!!

This has been driving me nuts since I got the car last year!

The noise is a high pitched whistle that is present only at an idle....weather in gear or park. Even while coasting in drive.

Sounds like a vacuum leak........

Seems to "come on" when the car is fully warmed up, just before the cooling fans come on. Then goes away after the fans go off, only to repeat the cycle.

Using a piece of rubber hose as a stethascope a traced the noise to the right side upper engine mount.......you heard right engine mount!

Let me tell you this, I have been a mechanic for almost 20 years, restored a classic car or two, and I have never experianced anything like it. I could not bring myself to believe that an engine mount could make a whistling noise.

Today I got so ****ed I said to myself "f-it Im taking the mount out"

Sure as **** as soon as I took the mount out, the noise stopped and did not return!

Un freakin' believeable!

I put the old mount back (dont have a replacement yet) and now the noise is "different" (different time it happens and frequency)

Now Im not saying this is YOUR problem but it was mine.

This is on a 77k '96 GLE by the way.......

Sorry so long but I had to get it out! I was going to start a new topic but since I saw your post I figured here would be just as good!

I had to laugh as I read this post because its so exact to my own experience its uncanny. I've recently replaced both belts and the tensioner pulley to rid the car of that freakin whistle and still its there. Get this, it also seemed to change in pitch after having the clutch and F/R mounts replaced last week.

I want to believe, but man, a whistling engine mount? Thats bizarre.

I just ordered a new mount from Courtesy Nissan today....should take about a week to get here. Ill reply after its done....

Seems like the mount has been updated and requires the use of new mounting hardwear (which is NOT included!)
Total with shipping to my door was $124.11
