Question about clutch

Sean97SE and I went on a trip this past weekend. At one point we were on this hill and he had to reverse. We were in his Maxima and he was driving. He put it in reverse and then gunned it kind of hard because he was scared of hitting the wall in front of him. Then all of a sudden we hear a click, click, click, click, click, etc. So then he stops, the car stalls, and the clutch is stuck in gear. It wouldn’t come out of reverse. Finally he just coasted down the hill with the car off and the clutch opened and he could take it out of reverse. Does anyone know why the clutch got stuck like that? Will he need to buy a new clutch?

What?

Explain "He put it in reverse and then gunned it kind of hard because he was scared of hitting the wall in front of him." Were you moving forward at the time?

We were on a hill. We had to go reverse up the hill because of where we were. There was a wall in front of us also. He was scared about hitting the wall so the car revved high and the clutch caught. We started going reverse and then we heard that clicking. So he stopped and the clutch was now stuck in reverse.

The clutch is the pedal thingy on the floor to the left of the brake. You mean the 5 speed shifter was stuck in reverse? Or was the clutch pedal stuck on the floor?

If you stall it or otherewise leave the tranny in gear on a very steep hill with the weight resting on the tranny gears rather than the parking brake like it should be, it might be difficult to shift out of that gear, esp if the clutch pedal was dead and left the clutch disc engaged.

As for the clicking, might be a dying CV joint or it might be something in the tranny. Is it still making the sound in reverse?
