Gas Mileage
Gas Mileage
I got a 97 SE. What kinda gas mileage should I be getting from it? I have check the mileage the past 2 tanks and i am getting 300 miles per 14 gallons of fuel with almost all highway driving. Is this normal or on the low side?
Do the math, how many MPG are you getting? I do all city, filled her up today, and calculated I'm getting 19.7-19.8 MPG in the city. Not sure about the highway, I've heard mid 20's, possibly high 20's?
thanks i know its about 22mpg that i am getting on the highway. I guess its on the low side but i wanted to know what can cause this.
I recently replaced the EVAP canister vent control valve. rest the ECU.The light is gone and there is no problem now since the past 2 weeks but i am getting bad mileage. Can figure it out why.

Plugs, feul and/or air filter. Tire pressure. Type of gas, (91 octane or better works best) cruising speed etc. Got a big checklist to run through.
I once got 33 mpg out my car
Crusining in 5th gear at around 40-50 mph for a very long time. I'll never do that again

My car tends to alternate for some reason. It basically gets driven on the highway all the time at about 70-80 MPH with a couple of trips in town. I generally get between 21-25 MPG. Keep in mind that this is in Cali where we tend to not get as good of gas milage.

My best ever was 30.5mpg on hwy with cruise on all the way. My worst was 21.5 mpg, mostly city and short drives, and some full throttle driving.
Your are getting about 21.5 mpg overall, which is on the low side.
If you have never had a full tune up and fuel system cleansing, this is to be expected.
Also, if you are not using quality premium fuel, you will lose a few MPG.
well i just filled up today all city driving 33.36 mpg.... of course i had only gone 113.5 miles on 3.406 gallons hehehe but i am sure i could get that out of the entire tank bc that was city driving
What kind of city do you live in? 33 mpg? That means your city traffic lets you cruise in 5th gear, or 4th gear for autos, most of the time? That's one helluva sparsley populated and spread out city.

Do you guys get that great gas mileage even while using the air conditioner? I usually get 17-19 mpg city and about 24 mpg on the highway, with the AC on most of the time. I live in sunny San Diego.

dont ask me but i am usually in 4th or 5th gear and i try to get there as quick as possible i find i still have more than enough power to get me through most predicaments while still keeping the rpms below 2.5k i kno i have issues
yea i have a 95 maxima and i get about 13-15 miles to the gallon mostly all city drving and short distances, just to see if it was my drving for one tank of gas i didn't go over 3000 rpm but i still got horrible milage, i just replaced my fuel filter, and my plugs are still good, i dono what it is

I check my ECU for stored codes and i found a 0504 which is signal to ECU and transmission anyways i reset it and it went away now i am getting 0505 i will see over the next few days what kinda of mileage i get, but i recently had gotten a check engine light and i had replaced a EVAP vent control valve.
More about location and driving habbits:
I live in NY and drive to CT to work so i i am usally on the highway its almost 95% highway driving and there is traffic at times so it is stop and go but still its not that much of stop and go driving that i should get 22 mpg. My car is in excellent condition. I get everything done at the dealers and have always had all work done on schedule.

Trouble codes stored in the Elcetronic Control Unit...... When your Check engine light comes on, there is a trouble code stored in your ECU. It meas that something is wrong with your Emissions system. You have to access the ECY and get the codes from it, then look up the codes and that tells you what the problem might be.....

lots of interesting stories, alright, first an idea, then a story:
idea: Ive been keeping very close track of gas milage from different starting points in different kinds of driving. I think that the two largest fuel consumers are the cai or pop-charger, and short-distance driving. The air filter, in my opinion has a larger effect on milage than we'd like to think. Also, in short-driving situations, My car averaged 15 MPG! now thats some $hIT.
So anyway, the story: i bought the car, and it was getting 15mpg on mostly short distance trips and 19 on the highway. (pretty bad). And now, some 2 months later, Ive slowly progressed to about 18-19 in the city and about 20-20.52354 on the highway. I dont know what the deal is, and im still mad that people here get milage in the upper 20's!
but im obsessed with this issue. A 100,000mi tune up should shed some more light on the subject, but please...... keep this thread going. knowledge through communication!

OK. Let me debunk that theory. When I got 33 mpg, I did with a CAI
All that aftermarket filters do is lett more air into the engine. Your throttle body and MAF still have full control over how much air is still coming in. If anything, a CAI or POP should increase your mileage slightly, becuase it enabels your engine to produce more power at lower rpms. Only a wee bit more, but more.
Another thing to think about when it come to finding out your mileage, think about how long you drive. If you drive for the entire tank for short busrts, like 5 mintues to the corner store, then let the engine get cold again, then your mileage is going to stink. When the motor is running cold, the ECU automatically runs a rich program. Only when it has fully warmed up does the ECU settle down to closed loop mode and optimize your mileage.

How exactly do you check for previously stored codes which have been cleared (leaving you with no CEL lit)? I have seen the diagnostic method for retrieving codes from a current CEL without an ECU reader.. is that how you check for previous CELs?
i have an auto with hai and ypipe and premium gas on new fuel filter and got 29 mpg averaging 78mph over 4 + hours non stop driving. i plan on beating this personal best tommarow when i go to st louie.

here's my $0.02
I log my fuel consumption, driving type/habit, type of gas, etc each time I fill up and here's what I have so far. Keep in mind - this is a 96 GXE (autotragic) and the odo had 53k when I started keeping track. Now I have 73k miles on it.
19.8 mpg - City, mostly short trips
18.29 mpg - City, mostly short trips
18.54 mpg - City, mostly short trips
21.53 mpg - City, mostly short trips & lot of hard driving
19.86 mpg - city, mostly short & conservative driving
19.72 mpg - city, mostly short & conservative
19.65 mpg - city, mostly short & conservative
20.04 mpg - city, mostly short & conservative
22.35 mpg - about 50% city, other 50% in hill country rally with lot of full-throttle driving (interesting huh?)
24.19 mpg - 50-50 city and highway (both conservative)
18.9 mpg - 416 miles of fast highway including about a 5- minute spell of 130+ mph trying to keep up with a G35
24.95 mpg - 368 miles of fast highway (75-85 mph) and 32 miles of short city trips.
23.63 mpg - 368 miles of fast highway - (brief 100_mph moments)
27.56 mpg - 368 miles at 72-74 mph cruise and 8 miles of city
My car as is bone-stock except for FSTB - but well maintained. No ECU codes. What I have derived from all this is that:
1) Short Trips with lot of coolong time in between kills mileage
2) There isn't much of a difference between driving very conservatively where the auto shifts at about 2500 rpm vs moderate agressive 3500 rpm + tranny shifts
3) On the highway - the 70-74 mph (cruise control) yields more mileage than upper 70's - low 80's MPH.
All in all - guess the VQ is more sensitive to not running at normal operating temperatures rather than variences in driving habits.

I've kept track for quite some time...
I've experienced 12.8 mpg, all the way up to 24.6 mpg...
I also had MAFS issues for quite some time (1 year +)...
Since my MAFS fix, I've averaged 18.8mpg...not great!!!
I'm going on a long roadtrip next weekend, and if I get under
20mpg, I WILL SNAP!!! My only guess is that my plugs are
screwed from the extended MAFS issues.

just thought i tell you guys that i dropped a K&N air filter in last weekend and the gas mileage just went from 300 miles/14 gallons to 360 miles/14 gallons. BIG DIFFERENCE I THINK!!!
