I used to have that similar problem but my check engine light was never went on. It turned out to be my MAF sensor. I replaced it with a used one from the junk yard and my problem went away. I hope that it is something simpler for you. Good luck.

I am not sure if this applies to the Maxima or not...

But if it were any of my other cars, I would be looking for vacuum problems.

Clean your throttle body. Go to www.motorvate.ca for instructions.

Mine did the same thing for the past while. cleaned my throttle body really good last Thurs. hasn't happened yet. Exact problem like you, I'd brake from a good speed on say a turn or to a stop and my rpm would shoot way down and then bounce up..or turn the car off. Trying cleaning you throttle body for sure, that fixed mine.

I had similar problems a year ago and it turned out to be the IACV. Might want to look into that, too.

I'm having the same exact problem...really sucks when you're doing 70 on the highway too!! I think mine is the IACV sticking, but I'm having a helluva time taking it off, I can get the front screw off, but the other one does not want to come off....any trick to this, or am I going to have to take off the entire TB?

idle air control valve... located next to the throttlebody with various sensors attached to it.

CHECK your MAFS wiring thoroughly!!! ...and I mean THOROUGHLY!!!
I had similar issues -- car shutting off, poor fuel economy, etc. --
and it turned out that the main wiring loom near the passenger side
firewall had cracks wires in it without ever being opened!!!

Because the main wire loom takes a deep bend there, the wires get
compacted and with the engine moving over the life of the car the
wires get bent back and forth and some break! This can also happen
if you get the wires wet and then they freeze -- the casing can
crack and the exposed wires slowly degrade.

Check your wiring...Right near the passenger firewall, where the main
loom bends, give the wire a gentle tug/shake with the car running...
If your RPMs change, your wiring could be damaged near that point.

Hope this helps,
FLO_BOY
