Coil Pack Testing?

Coil Pack Testing?

If I wanted to test an ignion coil on my 98 I30, could I just pull the harness off the back of each coil one by one then start and shut off the car and see if there is a difference in idle?

No, while the car is running, just disconnect each coil pack one by one. When you have an idel change, the coil is working, if the RPMs do not change when you disconnect a coil pack, then there is your faulty pack.

So I take it theres no chance of getting shocked by removing the harness from the back of the coils when the cars running right?

That way works ok.....but in all reality....the best way is to pull out the ole ohm readings on the packs. If your reading anything over 1.95 I would suggest replacing it. New the ohm reading is 1.6x the ones on my car that were going bad read as high as 2.2...replaced those ones, but the problem was still there so I then replaced the one that read 1.97 and the light went away. Its pretty easy oh and when reading the ohms its best to take the coil packs out.

I dont have an ohm meter right now, but I will try that method if pulling the harnesses doesnt work. Thanks for the help

I dont have an ohm reader either, but its more precise and better in the long run, where do I get one and how much do they cost? Also, so you measure the ohms when disconnected from the car?
