Drivers side drive axle leak

Has anyone here had the pleasure of changing the drive axles? The job went pretty well but for some reason, I can't get the drivers side to stop leaking. The axle has been changed out a couple of times now (as we thought that might be the problem), and the drive axle seal has been done as well.... Any ideas what might be causing this?

Sounds to me like your Differential Bearings, a comman problem with the 4th gen manual trannies...

The bearings start to wear causing a whine in the tranny top end of 2nd gear and 3rd...once it gets worse you can hear it in 4th...the worn bearings cause a slights movment in the innner CV joint causing the tranny to leak right at the seal

Have a professional change out the seal with a new one, if it still leaks, fork up to money for a tranny rebuild

could it be the drive axle seal only?

Like Matt said, if the seal leaks after replacement then it's most likely the bearings.

I have gone thruough 3 seals, so I am fairly sure my bearings are bad. No wine for me though.

Question is: how much play should be in the axle left to right or in and out whichever way you want to look at it after it is locked in the trans axle and is the seal supposed to be flush with the inner surface or the outer casing?

There should be minimal movement from side to side, and in and out doenst matter...

As for the seal, there is no stopper on these trannies so when you put the seal in dont put it in too far...I put a new one in last week too far, leaked, then I pulled the axle again and took the seal out. Then put it in alittle less far. it still leaks but less than it did

Like I30tmikeD said, I have also gone threw 3 seals and No whine..Actually when I took the seal off the last time I noticed that the trans case isnt in such good shape by the seal like it was nicked at

I30tmikeD Question for you ?? With the LSD when your cruizing at any speed like 3rd gear and you let off the gas and let the tranny hold the car back lets say at 30mph, do you hear a slight whine as the tranny holds the car ?? I am gettin this noise that i didnt get with my open diff ?? may be bearings

well then with the new seal i will put it in shallow and see if we leak because we were not leaking before the axle/seal changes and we are only leaking on the drivers side the pass side is perfect and if nogo then i will think about rebuilding the transaxle, but i am gonna try repl the seal one more time

Do that definetly...If it wasnt leaking before hand and all the sudden it started, then most likely the seal is in too far...Mine was in soo far that the back metal part of the seal, hit up against and made an indent in the metal on the back of the seal ...

Sure does. The car has done that since I bought it, so I did not thought much of it untill I realized my bearings may be probably shot.

So you think that wine is due to the bearings? Huh. Others with the problem have said the wine is only during acceleration.

Are the bearings for the locking tranny are twice as much as the open diff? I read that somewhere.

The only time the bearings sound bad to me is in reverse, I can actually hear them grinding if I lean my head out the window. It sounds terrible.

I planed on just driving till the tranny goes and replacing the whole fukcing thing.

Yea the diff side bearing (large one) for the LSD tranny is $120 rather then $45...then the other side is the same as the open diff at like 45$

in my case I switched to an LSD and upon switch over I hear a whinning sound when the tranny has to hold the car back after acelerating...I hear no noise when Im ecerelerating when when im cruizing ever since I got the trans...

My buddys car used to do this but louder, you can hear it inside bad...NO leaking axle though at all...Bearings were shot

So..I dont know
