Pricing Engine Replacement

How much should it cost to replace my engine with a new one? Is there any benefit/problem in going with a '99 (I heard they had 5 extra hp or something). I found some used '96-'97s for as low as $300 with 50k That's definately too good to be true! What should I look for, and how much is this project going to be overall? Or should I just do a rebuild?

Thanks!
