Harsh 1-2 is a typical nissan 'feature' when cold. As long as your tranny fluid level is good, it's a case of deal with it until it gets warm. Many have reported smoother shifts with Amsoil synthetic ATF.

My max has the same problem, and i talked to my friend (that works at a transmission shop) and he said that it could possibly be my temp. coolant control sensor, it makes you car shift at a higher rpm to help warm it up faster. I'm getting my new one wensday, let you know then if it solves the problem.
Good luck
Mike
