automatic transmission noise - HELP!!!

I'm new to this forum, so take it easy...

I have a stock '98 Maxima SE with 59,700 miles, that I bought from a reputable dealer a few years ago. I have always maintained it well and never had any major problems. I have been in 2 fender benders, that were professionally repaired, but nothing major.

Recently, when I accelerate hard from a stop I have been hearing a strange sound coming from what sounds like the transaxle. Everything is fine until the car gets to about 1800 - 2000 RPM, then it sounds very rough, almost as if something isn't lubricating properly. It is a mechanical sound that coincides with engine RPM. I think the problem is only in 1st gear in this RPM range because when I accelerate slowly, the sound doesn't occur, I think because the car shifts out of 1st gear before it hits those RPMs. I don't think its the engine, since the sound doesn't happen when I rev the engine in park.

I changed the engine oil (Castrol GTX) and transmission fluid (DEXRON III / MERCON). I didn't do a complete tranny flush, but I did get almost 6 quarts out of it. This seemed to help a little, but the problem is still there and has me worried. Would a full flush with Amsoil fix this, or at least help?

Has anybody ever had a problem like this or have any suggestions? My car is almost at the 60,000 mile mark, should I bring it in to a dealer before then to check it out? (since the power-train warranty runs out 60,000 miles, right?)

On what I think is an unrelated note, when starting the card in the morning (cold start), it sounds like the starter stays on for a half second or so after the engine turns over. I think this is unrelated, but any ideas? RPM sensor?

Thanks in advance,
Erik

Check your exhaust heat shields. They come lose and rattle over time.

hmm... it doesn't really sound like a rattling sound, but I'll def. check that out after work today. Thanks for the suggestion.

I check the heat shields out, and they're good and tight.

Any other thoughts?
