Airbag light

I have a 1999 Maxima GLE that has a flashing airbag light. The dealer just charged me a $100 bucks to tell me that the RS airbag module needs to be replaced for $1100 dollars. My questions are as follows.

Is this a common failure?
Is this a fair price for the repair?
Is there any warranty coverage for the airbags, if so what is it?
Have there been any recalls or TSB’s covering this failure?

Thanks for you for your responses

Re: Airbag light

When did it start to flash? Was it after work that involved the steering column? If so, did the horn stop working too? If so, then it may just be a broken spiral cable in the steering column, which can be fixed for much less than $1100.

RS module?

Do you mean SRS, are you referring to the airbag 'brain'?

Or does RS stand for right side? If it is right side, it won't have anything to do with your spiral cable (spiral cable affects driver side only).

Hey man, i had the dealer tell me the same thing when i went in to have my airbag light looked at for 100 bucks;bastards. And then a few weeks ago some *** hit me and i told them the light started after the accident. i got the car back 3 days ago and the light hasn't been back and i know they didn't replace anything with them computer or airbags or anything like that. I think they just cleared the codes but the dealer told me they couldnt' to it because it was a "hard code." So, my advice; get another opinion from someone else. good luck

Well, I did the light button trick and it worked. I hit the door light button seven times in five seconds with the key in the on position and the light has gone out. It has been out since yesterday and I have used the car for five times since it went out. I’m hoping that it was a soft code. I’m assuming that the RS on the work order means right side.

I’ll keep you all posted
