Painting rotors?

Im tired of the horrible rust that covers my rotors. I could easily clean the rust off but then it'll only come back and I'm too lazy to derust my rotors every month or so. Is it possible to paint them. Of course you cant paint the surface that the pads touch but im assuming you can paint the rest. Rather than painting them silver or black would it be possible to just clear coat then? The surface of the rotor is of course extremely smooth (the area where the pads dont touch) so how would I go about painting those.. (i.e. clear coat wont stick to the surface).

Any imput from anyone would be appreciated.

Thanks

??? i'm sure you would screw up your pads at the least. and i would also assume that the paint would quickly be worn off. i don't know where you live... near the beach maybe?? but all you should need to do is a couple of hard stops to remove the rust.

I have done this on my car and i am happy I used cast color paint so it looks stook ,like you said just paint the parts that the pad dont come in contact with and I think you will be happy remember the rotors get really hot so you need to use a high temp paint ,like engine paint

are you guys talking about rotors or calipers? b/c there is little surface on your rotors that your brake pads don't come in contact with.

Like Darrik said this its the parts of the rotors which arent in contact. Mine have a HEAVY coating of rust on them. The rust came off easy enough with some WD40 and a brush and I simply clear coated it afterwards. At least the front passenger side..When I started doing the front drivers side I managed to sear the lug in half and now it's impossible to get it off by any means I have available for me. Guess this project has to wait.

the best thing to do is paint them with your high temp. paint and then take them down to the local tire shop and have them turned, its a little more exspensive but you will be safe that way.
Good Luck

I've painted mine silver using about 3 coats of high temp paint. Some rust has come back after about a year and a half. Still looks much better than it did when it was all rusty. I used one of those foam brushes to paint. The surface is already textured so theres no need for the spray paint. Just dip and dab. The pads will get rid of any runoff onto the rotor. But there shouldn't be much if you use the foam brush.

How did you prep? Sandpaper and brake cleaner?

For prep I used a wire brush to get dirt and rust off. Then brake cleaner and wire brushed repeatedly until no signs of dirt, rust, and brake dust.

you dont have to remove them but removing them makes it 10x faster.

Removing them like Nismo said is a good idea. This way you can cut out a template. Use cardboard, thick paper whatever. Cut it so it fits over the whole rotor but leave the inside part that you want to paint visible. You can now spray paint with ease and not have to worry about runoff from the rotor being upright. Remember, many, many light coats of color and then for glossiness use some clear coat. Hi-temp of course.

If you get something on the rotors just use some rotor cleaner. I covered as best I could but some paint still got through. I sprayed the cleaner on and It left the paint where I wanted it but got rid of the paint on the rotor. Just my 2 cents.
