Weird noise, not trans bearing, and not trans related

ok i have a sound that comes from my engine bay somewhere it sounds almost like when a space ship approaches a city in a movie where it sounds like it gets louder than a lil quieter then louder, bad analogy i know, but then it goes away sometimes, it happens sometimes regardless of if im in gear or not, regardless of wether im acellerating or sitting at idle, its almost like my car is moaning, my bro's 96 auto does it and my 97 5 spd does too, his is alot worse than mine, louder, and for longer periods of time, but it just sorta comes and goes... it doesnt really happen ALL the time, and it seems that it happens more when it is raining / humid out, but i can't be sure of that...... any clue? if its happening to both of our cars, i doubt its tranny related, and i'm guessing it's associated with higher mileage max engine's he has 111,000, and i have 96,000 its really freakin annoying.... any suggestions?

It's been a long time since a space ship approach my city.

Don't think I remember what it sounded like.

Can you give us a sound clip of a space ship in 5+1 Digital Dolby so we can help you figure out whats wrong with your Max??

im guessing its either your belts or alternator possibly going out? my belts used to make humming noises before but when I got them changed the noise went away. I also had the alternator go out that made a whining noise but it was non stop so I guess thats not it

yes, when the engine is cold then they would humm but probably like 15 min of driving they will get quiet like normal. the belts were around 40k miles (5 years old) when this happened.
