ECT Sensor

My 1995 Maxima is running fine with no problems in starting even in Michigan winters. However the Check Engine Light came on and the code reported that the ECT sensor is faulty.
Questions:
What are implications of faulty ECT Sensor?
Does it damage engine if not fixed?
Does it affect performance or fuel consumption?
How much should it cost to have it replaced?

Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
S Khan

It may effect fuel consumption a bit if the ECU can't determine what temp your engine is at. It will also cause your cooling fans not to operate correctly which will lead to overheating while your in traffic.

It's a cheap sensor and can be replaced easily. It's located by the thermostat housing. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine block. There are two sensors there. The one closer to the engine block is the ECT sensor. The other one is for the temp gauge in your car.
