96 Auto Tranny DEAD???

96 Auto Tranny DEAD???
I have a 96 auto max with about 75,000 miles. Today my car almost makes 50 mph, transmission is not shifting quickly. When it does I have little to no power. When I floor it the car moves a little the around 20 mph it stops accelerating and the rpm needle stays stuck at around 4500 rpms. I have not been able to go over 4500 rpms. At low rpms the intake and exhaust sound alot louder that before, like the car is working extra hard. I's thinking of going to www.levelten.com in New Jersey and having them do a tranmission rebuid. Will this fix the problem?? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

One of two things is wrong, my guess is #2.
1) You have a clogged exhaust system, possibly Catalyic Converter issue or if you have a Y pipe, the flex section has collapsed.
2) Your MAF sensor has gone bad.

The key to your problem is in the above statement.
If your engine will not rev beyond 4500 RPM's then you have a problem with your engine, not your tranny. Keeping your foot on the floor will keep the tranny from shifting into 2nd gear until the engine RPM's get up to around 6 grand, which your not getting to and thats why it's not shifting. If you accellerate slowly, keeping the rev's under 4,000 I bet your tranny shifts just fine.

Bad MAF should set the light, but it also may not under some crazy chance. It could be working, but not working correctly. The clunk worries me, you could have a broken motor mount. I still don't think it's the tranny, your engine should be able to rev to 6 grand in 1st gear, if it can't do that then something is wrong with it. If the engine isn't running right, the tranny will feel weird too.
