Well I knew it was, but others didn't. Anyways I let my friend drive my car so I could see what it was like in the back seat. It was quite roomy, and very comfortable. Also, the system sounds awesome in the backseat.

Well we were going 60 east to 57 north. My friend asked, "Can I open it up."

I said, "Yeah go for it, I don't care"

Well we were going 85mph, 5 passengers in the car, all pretty heavy, and the system in the back. He left it in 5th gear and let it open. From where he let it open to our exit is exactly one mile, there is a sign.

He got the car to 141mph, and then took the exit, the exit is a long straight two lane exit that goes for about 1/4 mile then turns. Everyone in my car was in plain awe that the car so easily did this. I was amazed how fast the needle climbed, and it wasn't even giving up. At 141 it was still gaining pretty hard. Not bad for 5 people, and the driver weighs 300lbs.

With 5 people though!!

However, you have an auto, I have a 5spd. I think that makes a big difference at higher speeds because of gearing.

correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't the max speedo tops out at 140 mph? r u guessing u went 141 mph or do u have a digital speedo to tell u exactly how fast ur goin?

You are right in that the speedo tops out at 140. I remember a few years back, one of the car mags ranked the Maxima as the least expensive new car that can carry five people at over 140MPH...so I don't doubt that the Max can go over 140MPH.

Technically I'm sure it did say 141, but the car isn't actually traveling that fast, like 138 or something; close enough. I'm sure in the magazine they are more precise when they quote speeds and don't rely off of an analog meter in the car which is off (just by a little). Also a 1mph error in reading an analog meter, isn't exactly a large one; there is that little space between 140 and that piece of plastic that stops it. Also if he had just a different air filter (which is supposed to free up 4-6hp) couldn't the max go a tiny bit over 140? Perhaps, 141.
Note: He has intake, exhaust ( which easily free up enough hp to add more than 1mph ), plus others. His can probably do more than 141 if he didn't have the extra 700-900lbs.

Just my ideas/thoughts. He has a 97' so it's an analog meter, in 98 they started doing the digital thing; which personally I think is lame, are the 99/00/01 still digital??

don't get me wrong here. i'm not doubting that the guy could go 140+ mph on his max but i was just wondering bout how he got 141 from a speedo that tops out at 140 plus the fact that it's an analog meter. and another thing (don't mean to be an *** or anything) but doesn't the max has a speed limiter on it like 115 or something. i don't know if this is true for all trim of the max but i have a 95 gle and i have gone close to 120 stock so i'm not doubting that he had gone 140+. anything is possible right?

The se doesn't have a governor, the gle has one (121?) and so does the gxe (117?).

No one really knows about the governor for GXEs and GLEs. Some people run out of juice at about 120, while others can go about 138 with the same model. I just can't understand why a car that only weighs 170 lbs. heavier and has 50 more horsepower has the same top speed as the other ~139(my old Galant GSR vs. the Maxima}. Gearing maybe, but I think it is far more than just that.

The top gear ratios between an automatic and a 5-speed are very different:

In a 5 speed, 5th gear is about 25MPH/1000RPM - In a 4 speed automatic, the top gear is about 30MPH/1000RPM --

Take a 5 speed up to 6000RPM and you are at about 150MPH --
Take a 4 speed up to 6000RPM in top gear-- well you could try but it will never make it cause that would be 180MPH...

The 5 speed in top gear puts down about 20% more torque to the ground by gearing -- assuming that the engine torque stays the same... It will have a much easier time pulling to 140MPH than an automatic...

But the torque drops off pretty fast after 5000RPMs... so then the 5 speed is in a range of the engine that has quite a drop off in torque as compared to where a 4 speed auto would be at 140MPH at lower RPMs... So it all becomes a wash in that range -- So basically, they both might have the similar top speed, but the 5 speed just gets there faster --

BrianV, I feel you....Mine easily nailed 140 once with 5 people, and three of them were heavy. I was absolutely shocked that it went that fast with that much weight. That was also the first time I got it up that fast (I had just gotten it, go figure) so I was even more surprised. I swear I love that engine like a person!

I can vouch for the top speed, I've had my stock '99 SE Limted 5 spd up to 140 mph, and it still had little left in it. What an incredible engine. I can't even begin to remember how many drag races I've won with my Maxima.
