suspension sounds?

Hi I don't think I can search so I wanted to ask people before bringing my car in. I hear knocking sounds coming from the bottom front of my car at random times. Most of the time it's when I am braking to slow down at a light or when I go over bumps or potholes. Most of the time it's also when the car is going at less than 40 mph, but I don't know if it's just because I don't hear it when I am going faster.

What do you think (and what part) is making that noise? Oh, when it rains the sound doesn't show up as often. Help me out! Thanks..

What else is going on?

What else is happening with your car? Did you just lower it? are your wheels turned when the noise happens? Does your car make noise if you just turn the wheel and your car is still?

Re: What else is going on?

My car is stock all around. It usually happens when I am going straight, but sometimes when I turn while the car is moving slow. When the car is still and I turn the wheel, the sound shows up sometimes but not all the time.

I told my friend to sit in the car and I pushed down on the front corners of the car, and she said she heard some sounds. I wasn't able to hear it myself from the outside so I am not sure if she meant the same sound I heard while driving.

I posted a thread about 1-2 weeks ago. I'm having the exact same issue. I haven't been able to figure it out yet, but I think my problem may have something to do with the cv-shaft.

I have the same noise, and suspect its the front sway bar and/or end link bushings. It just got louder this week and am looking for poly urethane bushings. Ill probably have it done by next week and will let you know if it works

I have the same similarities. I'm definite the knocking is coming from my left front wheel. Either the cv boot, axle, or strut. I will also check the fstb. My dad said he had the same prob with his lexus and the mechanic to him that his *rotor* needs to be changed. He changed it and it does not make any more noise. I have a day off in about 2 wks and will check it out.

open your hood and while the car is on turn the steering whell back and forth. look at the bolt at the very top of the upper strut mount (where the FSTB goes). Does it move around.. it not supposed to..if so change your upper strut mount

THanks I will try doing that.

Do you guys know how much it would run approximately to fix something like this (given any of the scenarios mentioned above)?

I forgot to mention that the sound gets a lot more frequent and louder if I have a heavier load.

Entering the $uspen$ion Zone

Hi ! You are just entering the $uspen$ion Zone with your weird noises coming from the front end, my I30 was in the same situation months ago and I ended up paying about $2,000 dlls at the dealership to replace all the parts to eliminate the weird sounds.
Parts replaced were:

Struts
Strut Mounts
Strut Bearings
Outer tie rod ends
Alignment and Balancing

Now the weird sounds are gone, and the money from my checkbook too !

Good Luck !

Re: Entering the $uspen$ion Zone

You're kidding me! I am going to be so broke!

Will it be significantly cheaper if I don't get it fixed at Nissan but go to a regular mechanic (like some gas stations)?

You can take your car to any ASE Certified mechanic and expect same or better results as in the dealership, but I was having much trouble to get my Infiniti fixed, all the mechanics walked away just when they saw the infiniti logo in the front of my car, so my last option was the Dealership, they did a WONDERFUL work on my car, but GOOD WORK COSTS A LOT my friend !

Yes thisasian the STEALERSHIP fixed if for me, but actually I don't have time to keep visiting one mechanic a day, so the stealership did the work in my car, but at least they did a GREAT JOB on it for sure !

Hehe, sorry... true, you get what you pay for. You won't have to worry about them doing quality work.

One good thing (at least there's one) at the stealership is that the labor and parts carry a 12,000 miles/12 months warranty wichever comes first, so I'll be not worried next 12 months about my front suspension.

I used to go to this AAA certified shop but I still feel like I get ripped off. Last time to change my knock and oxygen sensor they charged me a total of 1100 bucks including labor. Afterwards, I started feeling that they try to charge as much as they can. The work they do is good, but I am not sure they are honest with their labor charges.

my g/f's 96 gle does something similar. It is more of a ticking noise when the wheels are turned at extremely low speeds or stopped. Doesn't happen any other time.

Is it the same thing? I can do the labor myself and I know its not the struts. Is it the mounts?
