buzzing noise from rear drivers corner ?

I've had my 96 gle for about 2 weeks now. When i got to work this morning (35 min hwy drive) i shut it off, got out, and locked via remote. I heard a little pulsing buzzing noise from the rear drivers fender. Had a look underneath and there is a black box of some sort under there and the noise was coming from there. Waited about a minute and it didn't go away. Went inside and after coffee it had stopped (15-20 mins).

Not sure if this is normal but could be. Any ideas what it couls be ? Without checking any manuels it looks like the gas vapor canister.

Thanks for the help , martin

You're right that it is a type of vapor canister for emissions control. I've never noticed mine buzzing, though. On my previous '96 GXE, there was a recall done on my car concerning this system, but I can't remember exactly what was replaced (I had AC warranty work done, and when they gave me the car back, they said they did recall service for that system, too. It was listed on the paperwork, too). You can check with a dealer about that, maybe it's something that'll be free.

There are some links on here about how some people have taken some of that stuff apart from back there and cleaned it. Seems like that worked for them.

What could it be???

It's "drivers side rear" mate.
Seriously though, if this thing has anything to do with the exhaust system I need it working. Emissions testing due within 2 weeks.

That must be some High tech Alarm system. Let say I was a theif, and i am going after your car. Do you think after this buzzing noise I would do anything to your car? For all I know it could be a Bomb.
