Do not use dish soap for washing your car. The dish soap, whatever the scent, is rather harsh. It will eat your clearcoat and paint. In time it will become dull.

Use the car wash soap. They are not that expensive.

Yes. Dish soap is made to cut through oil, which is what most waxes are based off of. Over time, it will fade your finish. If you do wash your car with dish soap, I suggest you immediately polish it with some Meguiars step #2 polish, or anything of the like.

Car paint is pretty tough. So, using dish soap now and then won't kill the paint. But I would suggest using a real carwash soap instead. I like Turtle Zip Wax carwash. For like $4.00 at Target, you get a 64oz bottle which lasts like forever (and I wash my car almost every week too).

As for wax, everyone has different opinions. Meguiars gives the best shine, but the protection it affords is pathetic..even when I do Meguiars 3 stage "clean/polish/wax" I end up with water beading after only two or three weeks. Turtle Wax (that green stuff) is not bad. It doesn't shine as brilliantly as Meguiars but it lasts over a month on my car. By far the best wax I've ever used was this stuff called "Pro-Polish with Teflon" that Costco used to sell like 10 years ago. That stuff was easy to apply and remove, had fantastic shine, and water beaded on it for months.

I use dish soap about two time a year on my car. I also put a splash of ammonia in with it. I do this to strip of the wax and get a really deep clean, usually once after winter and before winter. Then I do the polish and waxing after that. Just don't use it unless you plan on waxing it that day.

I agree with buch434 & Eric L. Think of all the driving conditions your paint has survived through. In chicago, rain, ice rain, hail, snow, salt, etc. etc.. Plus people spill stuff on cars on accident all the time; and everyone spills a little gas on occasion, and somehow I think a quick paper towel wipe doesn't remove it all, since you can wash your hands for 5 minutes and they still smell like gas. And gas seems a little more harsh than diluated dish soap water, yet I never see any paint faded on car's around the gas cap area.

Don't forget that salt and ice rain pound on your car's paint at 70mph or however fast your going for hours, and a wash will make it look like nothing happened. No way can someone tell me that some dish soap water applied by a sponge is going to ruin your paint, when ice/salt hits your car at 70 mph on the interstate. Although I could definitly see long term use taking off the finish.

Anyone have any comments on what ammonia does? I know you say only a splash twice a year, but just a splash of amomnia can also blind you.

it does. I only go in the winter time to get the damn salt off. but thats only like twice a year. HOw your car gets all scrached up is because of the ahh "washing rags" ( i dont know what they are called , the things that go across your car when they clean the car) they are not always the cleanest things due to really dirty cars that have lots of dirt and other stuff on them. when that car goes through the wash some of the dirt stays on the "rags" and when they go to clean your car they scratch it. ahh are you getting this because i dont how to explain it really well.

Dishwashing soap.
Dishwashing soap, especially Dawn is fine if you plan to eventually wax your car. But, if you are not, use a quality car wash soap such as Pinnacle Bodywork Shampoo ($19.95.) It works much better than cheap ones, but if you are in a low budget, try Eimann Fabrik Power Wash+. It costs $8.95. And...oh yes, Meguiar's Soft Wash Gel is good too! ($3.95)

P.S. German car companies reccomend nothing but water. Proffessional detailers reccomend Liquid Ivory. And believe it or not, newspapers work very well to clean windows (non-tinted)

Re: Dishwashing soap.
Well, you can still clean the outside of the windows with newspaper even if the window is tinted, since the tint film is usually on the inner side (in the car) of the window.

..
They got the new fancy 'touchless' car washes now for that rumor. I don't really think one with the big soapy brushes would damage your paint though unless something malfunctioned and a bar holding the brush hit your car hehe.

Those high pressure systems may damage your seals and will flood most convertible tops.
