transmission gurus - what just happened?
I am driving back home and am in 4th (its an auto) so I give it gas to level at 80mph. well at 70 i look at the tach and i see the rpm being the same as when i am at 80, only i am driving at 70. i let off the gas and the rpm goes down to like 1200. I give it some gas and it goes back up to like 3200 and i can feel it accelerating. I am like dumbfounded so I floor it, then let it up shift back into 4th. Guess what it's ok now. RPM don't drop when i am off the gas and I level off as usual.
It bothered me so I tried to replicate it again by going between 2nd and forth (thru 3rd as well) about 20 times down the road and sure enough its in 4th again and behaving like its in 3rd (ie there is no direct linkage between the gearbox and engine). gears shift fine and there is no vibration, noise or anything. but it felt like I had another gear, somewhere between 3rd and 4th. Is that a computer mess up or did I just get one massive slippage headache to repair?

Automatic transmissions only have direct gear correlation generally while accelerating. My mom's automatic does that too, when you let off the gas, the rpms dip because the transmission doesn't want to introduce engine braking to slow you down and pull the rpms up.
All the "gears" in automatic transmissions are floaty also due to the slipping fluid drive, it's normal.

I've never seen what you described. For me, it stays above 2K-2500 RPMS...when in 4th and above 60-70 mph. I've noticed minor slippage issues in mine but yours seemed major that day.
Well first, check fluid...second...let the tranny kill itself, then swap with used.

that's the one thing I hate about auto tranny's. They go when they are ready, not when you feel like it. Walking time-bombs I say. I like manuals because you can feel when they are getting worn.
maybe your filter is getting clogged. Just a thought.
I had my TC (torque converter) rebuilt and replaced, it cost be $250 labor plus the rebuild of the TC ($90). Though, it broke into pieces. What controls the TQ to be locked or unlocked max83? I'm curious, I dunno alot about tranny's except when they're dying on me.
