Front 02 Sensor Failure
Front 02 Sensor Failure
Hi, I'm new on this board.
Has anyone tried replacing the front 02 sensor on a '95 Maxima SE? My car wouldn't pass smog and the tech mentioned that the 02 sensor might be failing and sending the wrong info into the ECU thus affecting emissions and MPG. Please let me know if this can be done by a do-it-yourselfer or needs to be done by a qualified mechanic.
Thanks.

I just bought a Chilton repair manual from Checkers. The service manual included trouble codes and possible causes. Code 0302 points to EGR flow being excessively low or high during the specific driving condition. Then it goes on to list possible causes: EGR valve stuck closed, open, or leacking; Passage blocked; EGR valve and EVAP canister purge control solenoid valve; Tube leaking for EGR valve vacuum; EGRC-BPT valve leaking; EGR temperature sensor.
So step one is to check for EGR valve movement. The valve diaphragm should lift up and down w/o restriction while racing the engine from 2000 to 4000 rpm. The problem is that I cannot locate the EGR valve on the VQ30DE engine (1995-1998 engines), it seems to be hidden somewhere. The picture depicted in the manual shows an engine for pre-1995 Maxima. The earlier Nissan engine has the EGR valve right next to the fuel filter, very easy to locate. Can anyone help me locate this thing?

Problem fixed!
Turned out that it was both the EGR system and two O2 sensors. My mechanic was able to fix the EGR, unclogged the vacuum lines. The O2 sensors were the most expensive, $145 each. It passed smog finally!

That was originally my intent. I even bought a Chilton's service manual however, I couldn't locate the EGR valve on my 95 Maxima. And the pictures in the book shows the engine bay for an older model eventhough the books is for 1993-1999 models. The book has no specifics as to location, the pre-1995 Maxima EGR valve was very easy to locate which was right next to the fuel filter. Mine was just simply hidden somewhere. As to replacing the O2 sensors, last time I did this (on my truck), the damn thing would not come off at all. I guess because of the heat and the metal expanding, the threading was just shot and seized badly. I ended up taking off the manifolds and putting it on a vice grip and using a cheater bar and rachet to get it loose. I just don't see myself doing that right now, under 110 degree heat here in Las Vegas.

Glad you got it fixed, but you could have cleaned he EGR vavle yourself for free and bought o2 sensors online for around $70. Even Napa has them for 80 and the dealer for $100.

Good to hear you fixed it. Does it IDLE rough at all.
HEY ANYONE. How would you clean an EGR Valve. I know where its at, like under the TB kinda with all the hoses connected to it.
ALSO. Can hoses actually get stuck with crap or something.???? i thought that was all vacume

According to this link: http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecudecoder.html . It's an UNDEFINED code. Try and get the code again. It might give you more than one pair of codes. If you get the same codes, you might want to go to a shop that has a scan tool and see if it will pick up other codes. When mine came on, it was showing 0302 and 0506. 0302 points to the EGR system while the other code is undefined. When I took it to the shop to get the ECU scanned, it picked up the 0302 code plus other codes which pointed to O2 sensor failure, bank 1, 2, and 3. He charged me $75 bucks for the diag. But he got to the bottom of the issue.
