Clearing out tail lights, what/how many bulbs to buy?

Clearing out tail lights, what/how many bulbs to buy?
I'm going to remove the orange in the tail lights and I want to know how many amber bulbs I need to purchase to replace the white bulbs. I think they are 1156 correct?

That website lists it as 1156 for the rear turn signal.
I've read that most people take out the red light when they clear out the tail-lights. Is the general consensus that it looks better without the red bulb?
