1996 SE Tachometer

I recently bought a 1996 Maxima SE, Automatic. The tach was working fine, but then quit working for a day or two, then worked the first few times I started the car on day 3 or so. But now, it never works. It does not respond to engine rpm, but will slowly go up to indicate maybe 2000 rpm or so over several miles of driving and just sit there until you turn the car off. It always goes back to 0 when your stop the engine. I suspect a wiring problem (maybe a bad ground?) but I don't know where it picks up its signal and have no idea how to get into the dash. Anyone seen this and/or have any ideas.

Any/all responses greatly appreciated.

Greg

you might want to at least check the back of the cluster to make sure all connections are solid...

maybe also check to make sure the gauge face isnt hitting the needle and thus limiting sweep...

after that, take it to the dealer or buy a new cluster?
