Rear Main oil Seal

Rear Main oil Seal
The rear main oil seal is held in place by a retainer which is help on by 3 bolts. After removing these three bolts the retainer still won't come loose.
Is there any special trick to this? Is it just 'glued' on by the sealant is is it help in place by along the bottom edge of the retainer by the bottom half of the engine?

It is held on there by a Permatex type glue/sealant. Believe me, you will just have to keep trying. We used an assortment of flat-head screw drivers and all, but we finally got it out. It was a pain in the rear.
When you go to put the new one in, make sure you remove those pins on the left and right side of the seal. That will make the installation of the near rear main seal and lower oil pan seal much easier. (BTW, did you get teh rear main seal AND the lower oil pan seal that is half-moon shaped). You will need to get it. But, after you remove the pins and install the new seals, you can knock the pins back in with a hammer.

If I understand you correctly...
1) I can pull the two guide pins out, and that will allow me to remove the retainer without disturbing the oil pan?
2) I *do* need the half-moon seal. (will pick that up tonight)
3) After I reinstall the retainer I just tap the guide pins back into place?
