For automatic car... well, let say you are stock in traffic for more then 20 min and you not moving its good to put in nutral. you take the load of tranny and engine. But when you brake its not that its bad. But it won't help your breaks. Because you just takeing the car out of the gear. On my car I know this it that when I break it down shifts. Also I would say if you do it too much it will ware out the clutch pack in the tranny and also makes the tranny to run hotter. I could be wrong. But let see what others will say.

Automatics dont have clutches actually, it's a torque converter. And no it isnt bad to shift into neutral. When you have it in drive, and you hit the brakes, its nearly the same as having the car in neutral, only you still have the RPM up. It isnt bad at all to do that.
