So now I have the upper section of the CAI unit -- that replaces the OEM resonators between the MAF and throttle body --

And I intalled the filter that came with the unit behind the battery in much the same way that the JWT/Stillen filters are mounted -- except the CAI filter is physically smaller --

Now at light throttle, there is no audible difference between that filter and the stock air box -- Give it about 1/2 to 2/3 throttle and you get a nice aggressive induction note without being too attention getting ----

But then go to full throttle and all hell suddenly breaks loose sonically speaking -- My car sounds almost like something you'd hear at an NHRA drag race -- its LOUD -- It sounds good but its LOUD - Take the Stillen intake unit sound with the OEM resonators mentioned above -- and then imagine your ears hearing at least double that sound output
(10db - to human ear sounds 2X as loud)-- Thats what its like -- No Y-pipes on my car either -- and a relatively quiet aftermarket exhaust as well...

It would not surprise me if I'm close to the 90db noise limitation of CA vehicle code...

I haven't drilled out the fender well to put the rest of the CAI tube in and relocate the filter -- My question: Is the CAI in its intended form (air filter out of the engine bay) an ear blasting modification as compared to other intake mods??

 

Just put in the CAI with the stillen filter.
Idle is normal and cruising speed is fine.
But goose the pedal a little and this engine really lets out a wonderful gutteral growl - almost, if not exactly like an Acura NSX. -
Louder...yes, but only when under a load.
No y pipe or other engine mods. Stock muffler and all.
And for your question - I don't know.
We did drill out the fender wall and installed the stillen air filter. It is still loud but may not be as loud as what you've experienced.

 

Especially at speed. In fourth gear going 90 - then step on it the car whips to 110, pushing you into the seat like when you're in first. The CAI is a must.
Quiet when driving reservidly but becomes brawny when stepped on. Cooler than I expected. And for $250 it's a sweet engine/ performance upgrade.

 

I know tha you are happy with your mod, but I doubt that the 1-2 hps to the wheels that it makes that much difference.

 

But my butt would disagree. It does give the car a more "by the seat of the pants" feeling. And that's all that truly matters.
