Factory sunroof on my '96 SE stopped working and the dealer said it will cost $1200?!

It stopped working and won't even close. I have 2 pieces of wood along the frame/rails to keep the glass up flush to the roof in order to prevent leaks. I don't know much about sunroofs other than the obvious, hit the switch and it opens or closes. My question is why would it cost that much to fix? I already have the glass and the interior rails that could still be used, so what could possibly cost $1200?!?!? Any thoughts?

Sounds like typical dealer lingo, 1200 sounds like a replacement for the entire thing. Chances are the entire unit does not need to be replaced, but they'd do it anyways.
This happens on honda's a lot ( will open and won't close ) and is blamed on their cheap recycled plastic which warps and bends over time due to various types of weather of extreme hot and cold. Although nissan's do not use recycled plastic, if you live in an area with various types of extreme weather, over 5 years I could see this happening on any car.
When you try to close it do you hear any noise at all, like the motor running?? I remeber on my maxima (96 se), I would press the button and sometimes it wouldn't close, but if I held it for 5 seconds or so it would eventually start to close. Sometimes it would stop half way too, I noticed this problem only really occured when I was using a lot of power like closing all four windows at once and shutting the roof.
I know this shouldn't work, but I only suggest it because I had a friend whose power windows would close when they wanted to, so he would unplug the battery, wait a minute, plug it back in, and then they would roll up when he pressed the button. Why this worked, I have no idea, but it did, and maybe there is a one in a million chance this could as least get your roof closed.
